Too Cool :)

Was thinking Wilson was there first barrel maker, but could be wrong, think I read that in a old hand loader magazine, and nra magazine.

I guess I missed the boat on Rugers. I had a Model 77 tang safety in .243 I bought in the early 80's. It didn't shoot too great, but back then I didn't reload and we didn't have the wide variety of ammunition to try. The tang safety was to me dangerous. It was easy to push off inadvertently when moving through rough/thick areas. I don't miss it and owning it kind of soured me from trying another. But you sure have to admit Bill Ruger was a smart guy!

Factory ammo would about pierce primers, so I open the throat to accept 140 gr nosler bt even with the neck and shoulder. That m77 would accept this load with no problem, but a very compressed load for sure, still have this rifle and same brass, still shoots the same.
Load came from a book from Bob Hagel. This load is way to warm for a unaltered barrel.

I was at the Cabela's in Hamburg Pa about 10 years ago and had looked over the used gun rack when I first got there, unfortunately I didn't see anything of interest. So i piddled around the store for a while, looking at the new rifles, looking through the bargain cave, still nothing of interest. I had been there for a couple hours so I Had lunch in the store and then decided to leave. As I was walking out I went back by the used gun rack just for a quick look again. As I got closer to the rack I saw the gold ring of a leupold scope that I didn't see the first time around. I quickly picked the rifle up and to my surprise it was a pristine tang safety Ruger 77 varmint rifle chambered in 6mm remington just like the OP's. I looked at the price tag and was shocked, the rifle was priced at $680. I think I sprinted to the check out counter and wasn't letting the rifle out of my sight. They rang the rifle up and the price on the registrar said $780, told them the tag says $680 and thats what I ended up paying for it. The leupold scope on the rifle was a Vari-x III 6.5x20, pretty much the best deal I've ever gotten at Cabelas.

My first 77 was a 220 Swift heavy weight, a 1976 centennial model that was an absolute tack driver. I sold it a few years ago (mistake). I bought three more standard weight TS models in 220 Swift, 257 Roberts and 7x57 Msr, and also a 77-22. I rebarreled the swift and the 257, and made the 257 into an AI. I AI'd it when almost new and put a 9 twist Rock Creek on it last year. I am refinishing an extra stock I had for my Swift and it is almost done. The 7x57 is original and will remain so. Barlow
