To Prairie Dog Hunters out there....

Hey Guys & Gals,

I typically make my annual prairie dog hunting pilgrammage out west in mid summer with good success (Montana). However, this year my job may dictate that I go out west early - perhaps sometime in early May. Anyone have experiences they can share with "early" season PD hunting?

As always, thanks for everyone's input.

Jason

I shoot p-dogs all year long out here so the months really blend into each other.
There is no "hunting" them, just shooting them!!
March to Nov. is very busy for me shooting them.
But for out of state shooters May to Sept is good as any.

Depending on the weather you should have good success then. Hopefully you will avoid the spring showers. You will probably be killing dogs with babies still in the boiler room. I am pretty sure the birthing starts mid-May thru the end of May. Early June is my favorite time to go. The weather is usually good and the dogs are out in force.
P-Dogs is one of the two problems I have found living west of the divide: We don't have any. No 'dogs' and no 'Goats' (antelope).
Good luck with your hunt.

Thanks for your input Barry. Your obervsations are well taken. I too have observed that June is usually the best time. I have gone on early trips (early May) and come home with lots of ammo, only to return to the same Dog Towns 1 month later and had much better shooting. I'm going to hold out until then.

we do have speed goats and p-dogs on this side but it is getting harder and harder to find land to hunt on.... land is getting gobbled up by leases that the big spenders are getting and the outfitters are leaseing up bird hunting land also.....then it is the ranchers charging a daily gun fee.... i don't blame the ranchers because it is hard enough eeking out a living at that.....
it is a lot of no walking, talking, chewing, spitting or anything else.......Not funny Docta Jones.........

We usually go the end of June. The one trip I made in May was a wash out. Literally. It started raining an hour after we arrived and didn't quit for two days. Then the fields were so wet we couldn't get off the main road. Just about the time the fields dried out, it began to rain again. Went back in late August and the grass was so high you couldn't see the dog mounds.
