To much oal reach on custom built 6.5?

I had a 6.5 284 built a couple of years ago and I really haven't a lot of time to shoot...but be that has it may when I reload the oal will not even get near the lands.
I have to reload at a length that I comfortable with the bullet seating.
The bullet and casing start about touching wear the boat tail reaches the max. width of the bullet.
During that winter do you think I should take it back and have him readjust i sot I have that option of keeping the cartridge just off the lands.?

It would also seat the bullet deeper and perhaps make it safer.
and also have read how accuracy can be improved by having the bullet closer to the lands?
Any suggestions?

What bullet weight/brand are you using?
Your smith may have throated it for 142's or 140 vld's, lighter weight bullets would be short....anyway more info needed.

Most match 6.5 X 284 reamers are throated to seat the long VLDs 139 Scenars, 142 SMK and the like) out quite a ways in order to keep the bullet out of the powder column. Generally the bullets end up seated out far enough that they will not magazine feed in a short action.

Seating them out that far is not a problem otherwise as long as there is suffiecient bullet bearing surface in the neck of the case. I seat my 6.5 X 284 rather long in the match chamber which makes me happy I decided to go with a standard length action so I don't have to pull the bolt to remove an unfired cartridge which would be the case had I used a short action 700 rather than a standard length Nesika.

Of course if you are using non VLDs or lighter bullets then a shorter throat may be needed but if you are using the VLDs then just seat them into the lands. I don't like to seat to hard into the lands myself, about .005" does fine.
