To Lap or not to LAP.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't mean to say the lapping caused the large groups. Just hadn't herd lapping was out dated. I think recoil management is more of the problem. I'll have to give the bedding a try. Will sizing wax work for a release agent?
No. Too easily wiped off.

What is the preferred release agent with JB weld. Is there a commercially made “release agent”
Thanks for help here.
Having lapped and bedded rings/bases for a couple of decades now....I'd not use JB Weld as a ring bedding compound. You want something that has a bit of flexibility. The best I've found is old school AcraGlas Gel. It has some Nylon in it for a bit of flexibility and gives the best results. Here's some done this way:

For bedding the bases to an action, J.B. Weld or ProBed 2000 are what I've found to be the best.

Anytime I am around someone shooting a big caliber kicker like the 338WM I always ask if I can shoot it. I fire off a round and then pretend to be cycling the action but close the bolt on an empty chamber. Then tell him it's ready to go and watch him "shoot". If he about jumps out of his skin when the rifle goes click......you know the problem. Probably 80% of the time this is the problem. Even with experienced shooters, big magnums can be a challenge to shoot accurately.
