TN Mid Range State Championship

Whooo dogs did we have a nice weekend for the State Mid Range championships!! There was some great shooting and some really good times spent together with the best people I know. Shooters!

65 Shooters would show up Sat and Sun. Saterday morning broke cool but mild. Light Cloud cover and real gentle winds.. You know the kind that just wafts along so that you don’t pay any attention to it until Bang! Oops got one out of the X ring or ten ring. 7 folks Shot perfect 200's at the 300 Yard line. Brian Bowling F-O, John Bishop FTR, Doug Fletcher and Gary Henry had to play second fiddle to Charles Freeman of Mississippi as he Creedmoor the two for mentioned all with a 200-13X.. Now that is some close shootin. Not far behind are Matt Fitzmayer and Matt Kubic with 12X and 10X respectively.
500Yd Line 5 shooters shot 200 cleans. Buddy Reich of Texas and Matt Owens of Arkansas in F-O Class. Doug Fletcher on his Home Range and Steve McGee from Kansas shot 13X cleans with Steve coming out on top with the last X being the winner in the prone Sling. David Mayfield of Littlerock also shot a 12X clean with his Palma Rifle. No Cleans in the FTR. Our own Rodger Carpenter lead that yard line with a 199-10X.
600 Yd. line 6 shooters shot perfect 200's One in F-O being BO Hood. Gary Henry from Southwest MS Tied Shirley McGee from Kansas with 13X Clean's with Gary coming out on top on the Creedmoor Decision. Followed by Memphis's Doug Fletcher with a 12X David Mayfield 11X and I don’t how he did this but Charles Freeman shot a 4X clean!!! Damn I think that is harder than a 10X or higher.
So the Top shooters for Day one! Jim Murphy Lead the FTR with a 592-22X one point behind Rodger Carpenter and Russell Myers. F-O had Matt Owens at a woppin 598-34X and Bo Hood only two X's Back. Sling shooters Shooting My Palma Rifle and My Ammo with a Perfect 600-38X out of 600 was Doug Fletcher of Memphis. Cheap Sierra 155's and Varget. No Problem. That Is a first 600 shot by Doug and I’m very happy he had a wonderful day. The Race was on however... David only dropped one point and a rash of folks only dropped two points for the day. Those included Gary Henrey, Shirley McGee, Matt Kubic and Charles Freeman. That Ended Iron sight Day 1 for the Sling shooters.
We moved to the Old Club house for a BBQ Dinner afterward. Wow I’m glad they left me some as I closed up the Range for the night and got just a hand full of some amazing Pork and Chicken Q... Wow.
Sunday Day Two. This the Any Sight Day for the Prone Sling Shooters and it started off Cloudy but almost no wind. What was there was very slow and changed gradually. Mirage off the barrel was an actual problem for most Fclass shooters.
300yrds 17 Shooters shot Cleans here!!! Top F-O Bo Hood ripped off an amazing 18X! Buddy Reich a 17X Matt Owns 16X, John MacKeigney a 14X, Alton Britt at 12X and two 11X David Mclain and Jason Goldsberry. Jim Throneberry of TN took the FTR with a 14X Clean just ahead of Skip Barkleys 200-11X. 8 Shooters shooting Sling Cleaned the 300 yard Stage. Tied with 200- 16X David Mayfield of Littlerock and Steve McGee of Kansas. Shirley McGee, Myself and Larry Sparks from OakRidge TN shot 200-14X. Gary Henry from Mississippi and Ken Foster all the way from Nebraska Hammered out 200-13X and Howard Pitts with a 12X.
500 yard was a little more trouble as there was no Mirage to see with the clouds and the Flags just barley puffin along. A slight fishtail from 6:00 made it interesting. Shirley McGee ripped off another 200-14X to match her 300 yard Stage. Followed by some clown Named Russ with 11X and THE David Mayfield with 10X, That made Three of Us with no points dropped going into the 600 yard Stage. The Race was on again. John Bishop of Louisiana shot the only 200-10X in FTR. “BO” Hood Lead the F-O with 200-16X and Matt owns of Arkansas 1X behind!!! These two are now only 1X separate from each other for the Whole weekend going into the very last match. It doesn’t get any more exciting than that. I was posting scores on the board as fast as I could between running the line and shootin and folks where lined up to see who was winning. So who is going to pull it off???
At 600 yards the last Match Russell Riser from TN snuck in there and stole a pebble in FTR with a 199-4X. The Flags just layed down and all you had to do were lay there and shoot. Perfect no wind Zero at the mid part of the day.. Just amazing.
Good Golly Miss Molly Ten shooters in Prone Sling shot perfect scores at 600 yards. Some electing to shoot scope, some shooting Iron sights for both days. Leading the pack again was Shirley McGee with a whopping 200-17X shooting her 240NMC prone gun and some glass on top. If you been playing along you will see Shirley shot a 600 out of 600 with eye popping 45X’s which just so happens to up the ante on the Woman’s national record by 2X’s. Woot Woot!! Not to be out done THE David Mayfield is also Clean with 13X at 600yrds and also a 600pointer for the days aggregate. Let’s back up however and see some X pounding scores. 200-15X Ken Foster and my good friend Rick (Snake Eater) May of Memphis TN with his personal best… Shootin iron sights left handed in a 6BR Elliesio R1Tube gun suckin on an Oxygen tank from Post Lung Surgery less than two months ago. That’s Right folks… No excuses now. Other 200’s included Howard Pitts, Bob Horn of Arkansas, Steve McGee, Gary Henry, Charles Freeman, and Matt Kubic from Chattanooga TN. This leads us to the Drag out fight in F-O between BO and Matt Owen’s. Well Matt steps up the line does someone armed pushups and rips off another 200-15X for a perfect 600-46X’s on that Itty bitty Fclass Target! Only dropping two points in Two days 1198-80X that’s right 80X’s…shooting Jim Fowler’s 6mm Dasher and 105 Hybrids. Nothing like getting beat with your own gun! Dang. Bo dropped a point at 600yards to place second with a 599-44X and Alton Britt 599-36X. Folks that is some shootin.

Championship winners are
FTR- Russell Myers of Arkansas 1st Jim Murphy of Kentucky 2nd Ronnie Ralston 3rd of TN and TN Champion. Interesting none of these fine shooters shot a 200 Clean but never had a train wreck and shot very well all weekend to lead the pack. And a rather large pack of FTR shooters it was.
F-O – Matt Owens 1st, BO Stewart Hood of MS 2nd, Alton Britt of MS 3rd and I have to say Jim Fowler of Arkansas was 4th. So Jim’s rifle took 1st and 4th.
Sling shooters. Shooting both days with his 308 Palma rifle and iron sights and 155gr SMK 2155’s Was David Mayfield of Little Rock Arkansas dropping only one point all weekend and it was on the 300yard target of all places. 1199-76X Second was Shirley McGee one point behind 1198-78X’s. Third place Gary Henry only 3points down 1197-67X’s. 4th place and TN resident champion Doug Fletcher 1195-67X. Who took the scope off the 308 Palma rifle after the 300 yard stage and put on the Iron sights too finish the day. We now have over 100 National Records set at this Range in Memphis TN. Its wonderful range with great light, low wind, nice carrier’s and pit. We can host more shooters so if you can make it next year you might want to put this one on your calander.
God Bless

Jim Fowler shot real well. He just got nickel and dimed on each yard line. You could not drop any points o n this weekend and to boot you best have a bunch of X's too. It sure showed who had good ammo and barrel combonations that is for sure.

I think the FTR guys had the most challenge. They put up some good scores but there was some wiggle room to make it to the top. In Prone Sling and FO there was NO wiggle room... you had to be perfect at every yard line for two days straight. BO has had a great year i believe. I saw him out in Raton thisyear tearin up the Fullbore Nationls as well.

It was a fine finish o the season nonthe less.

(Jim the gun bearer) Ha!

Jim Fowler is one of my favorite guys to shoot with! He came to our first Midwest Championship a few years ago and taught us a lesson with a great performance. Not to mention that he won the Perry match this year by a wide margin. Mr Bo Steward Hood came to our July match this year for the first time and shot a 200 19x on the first relay and kept us on our toes all the way. The match is not a registered match or he would hold a record for that target. You memphis shooters are a real tough bunch at midrange no doubt.

Thanks Mike. You guys up in St. Louie have a first class setup, and put on great matches. I wish you could have made Me,phis this year. Be sure and put the regional shoot in the spring on your list of attending. Matt has always been a tough competitor! All I did was a little reloading...next time I load for him though, I might be a little less "attentive" to my powder throws!

My gunsmith, Dusty Stevens and Bartlein barrels gets all credit for the rifle. It's definitely one of those "hummers" you spend years looking for.
