Tipped verses untipped Sierra Matchkings

well, I have shot 77 bergers , 77 smk and now 77 tmk out of my mk12 rifle. 77 bergers and aa2520 was my previous go to load that would shoot into an inch at 200. my current load is 77 tmk with 2000MR powder and will shoot the same at 200, if not a tad better. love the bullets

I've shot both TMK and SMK 95gr from a Howa in 243 with 10" twist. Both of these are on the fringe where stability is concerned. I've had great groups from both, but the SMK is more consistent, the TMK occasionally opens up. The TMK is also a little longer, so I suspect that being on the edge of stability, the extra length may cause the groups to be less consistent. A better comparison would be shooting them from a rifle with a 9" or faster twist. So, if you're on the edge of stability for your given caliber, twist and bullet weight, the SMK is likely the better choice, otherwise ask someone smarter than me .

I used to shoot a an excellent .308 Criterion barrel in mid-range F/TR. it had about a .090" freebore. i found my load for the Tipped 175 MK's to be just about identical to the standard 175 MatchKings. i seem to recall 43.5 gr of Varget in Lapua brass jumping the tipped bullets about 10 thou. they definitely were more seating depth sensitive than standard MatchKings

just wanted to add, that the TMKs, once tuned did shoot very well out to 600 yds in my rifle. in the end, however, i wanted a higher BC bullet and went with Berger 185 Juggernauts instead.

Tipped is longer. Not as accurate for me .

I need to test the 168gr and 175gr TMK's for my 308 when I get time, but so far my best results with a polymer tipped bullet have been with the 178gr Hornady A-Max.

I have tried the .224 77 tipped versus the HPBT Match Kings in both my bolt 223 and AR - my rifles did not like the tipped bullets.

Nice to know I'm not the only one. My SPS Varmint doesn't like the 168 TMK's at all. 168 MKs or 168 AMAXs shoot quite well (when I'm on my game); the TMK's not so much. Recent testing showed that there is a load that will group as well as the AMAXs, but the node seems to be really tight.
