Tip for Hurricane Folks

I've seen a map where they called Alabama ... Mississippi.
Isn't knowing the states still taught in elementary school ?

I read somewhere that 8 companies own 90% of the news vrs in the 80s something like 50 companies owned 90.
So the 8 are telling ppl what to believe ....

Now they've had to settle for "historic", the least superlative adjective in their quiver. Not sure why it's historic, it hasn't set any new records yet, and doesn't look like doing. (I hope not - stay safe out there.)

I think they meant to say histrionic.

I am not sure of the weather channel objectives but I have become addicted to them for 4 days now, we went through a big scare in 2016 with Matthew coming up along the first coast, I am near 30 miles from the coast and Matthew scared the heck out of us, we had 17 inch's of rain, 70 plus mph of wind and the storm surge pushed the St Johns river up into everything in Jacksonville.

I was dreading Dorian coming up and over us regardless of the category, we are sure relieved to see it might go up the coast farther east than expected, IF IT EVER gets moving again, I know those poor people in the Bahamas will be happy when it finally moves.

My son works for the Jax fire department and they just put them on 48 hour shifts because of Dorian, but with the changes I am hoping they rescind those plans tomorrow, but they may not because it is better to plan for the worst and be ready. Matthew really hurt Jacksonville in 2016 and it didn't even make landfall here. Anyway our prayers to all and lets hope Dorian gets the heck out of here.

Well it's been an hour since I switched over to the Weather channel, i'm starting to get the weather withdrawal so I better put the tv on and fix this, boy I sure will be glad when Football starts again.

Good luck there KeithK. We make light of the reporting, but it doesn't mean we take lightly the peril our brethren here face.

I gather you don't consider college games "football". That's about all I'll watch now, the pros are spoiled brats. My alma mater upset Purdue, coming from 17 down and a true freshman walk-on kicked a 56-yd FG with time expiring. One of my hunting buddies is from Indiana and a Purdue alum and isn't speaking to me. It's the little things that matter.

Our friends on The Weather Channel are in a kind of grief state since it has dropped to a Cat 4 storm and seems unlikely to landfall. One of them admitted, reluctantly, that it is expected to continue weakening. Another just said "It's still a very dangerous storm, I want to emphasize that. It has changed from an unimaginably dangerous storm to an incredibly dangerous storm."

Wow. It sounds like they need to create a Category 6 or something (like "11" on the volume knob.) Why is it that every strong weather event now is "unprecedented" or "historic" or "biblical"? I know why, but I'll leave it unsaid here.

I’m feeling pretty good about my personal situation in Jacksonville but my heart hurts when I think of the people in the Bahamas ! I can’t imagine what it would be like to have a cat 5 storm just park over you for over a day ! Even the strongest buildings will crumble as their foundations are washed out. The damages to the Bahamas is going to be total devastation. I expect that many of the smaller islands will be barren coral rocks after this. Some islands returned to reefs, no longer above water.

No your so right about the NFL, college football has become the go to games, the wife and I will watch college any team before the pro's, I enjoyed the Oklahoma Houston game the day before but I made that post Monday and of course couldn't find any thing but the weather channel LOL. Not sure how I missed the news but was surprised to see Jalen Hurts at QB for Oklahoma. Going to be an interesting season this year for a bunch of the colleges.

We are watching the weather again as Dorian is fixing to come by us tomorrow, pretty confident right now we will only see rain and some tropical storm force winds which is a lot better than the hurricane force for sure. I am hoping now it turns more than predicted and misses our friends in the Carolinas cause it sure looks ominous for them currently.

I do watch MLB and NHL, but only certain teams, and avoid NFL and NBA now.

Sitting here in Suwannee County Florida watching tv and catching up on 6br forum post. Muggy and overcast right now. Us Floridians certainly have been spared from this one. Thank you God.

Yes sir Thank God, I awoke this morning thinking about how bad it was going to get here in Jacksonville and so very happy to see very light conditions so far, of course Dorian hasn't got to us quite yet but the weather people are all trying to explain the new development of dry air being sucked in to the hurricane is why the change.

Any how, Thank God for the break and prayers for Georgia and the Carolina's.

Well Dorian is almost past us and the eye is just entering the Georgia state line but 100 miles off the coast thank God, I feel Florida has dodged a bullet, I have only needed to drain the pool twice today, that is a huge improvement over the 17 inch's last time. And no working on my neighbors house's cause of trees thru the roof and chain sawing trees to unblock the street, and best of all no power outage.

I have kept an eye on the local news coverage today and this hurricane was far enough off shore that the damage and flooding has been minimal, Jacksonville shut down just about everything here, even my old employer the USPS didn't deliver mail today, I was shocked, but the UPS guy delivered a package today, go figure.

Heres hoping Georgia and the Carolinas are as lucky as Florida was, were praying for you.

You haven't talked to anyone in the Bahamas?

I was told 6 days ago to go to Jacksonville for briefing and deployment..........I'm still home, then they said go to the GA/FL state line and we'll tell you where to go from there (I'm an independent adjuster so all expenses are on me), I'm still home, today I called and they said "we don't know where we want you just be ready!" ;-) I'm ready but not leaving home until the claims hit my "inbox" so I know I have work.

Dang Shooter, that's 30 miles from Jacksonville to the state line, whoever is sending you doesn't read maps very well do they. Your smart to just sit and wait, that Hurricane has a mind of it's own and may not hit land again. It did way too much in Bahamas, I hope it's done.
