tip a 300 338 without trimming, still a benefit ?

i am considering tipping my berger 300 338's.
specifically for 2000 yards.
if i tip only will i see a benefit with the bergers(hybrid otm tactical, #33109)
posting elsewhere also....

I tip and trim the 300 grain OTMs for mine.
I will caution you that you can make em shoot worse! I've not tested doing only one operation to see which one provides a noticeable difference.

Pointing bullets that have not already been pointed during manufacture will almost always increase the BC, regardless of whether they are trimmed first. The BC improvement will depend on the diameter of the meplat relative to bullet diameter. However, the expected increases in BC are not huge and will usually fall in the range of a 3-6% increase in BC. Trimming the meplat prior to pointing will improve the appearance of the points, especially if the meplats were a little ragged to begin with. I do not personally trim meplats before pointing. Fortunately, it is not essential to trim meplats first in order to gain an increase in BC and better consistency (precision). As has been noted above, a little goes a long way with pointing, so a conservative approach is recommended initially. I typically set the pointing die so as to close up the meplat from about 50-75%, which seems to net most, if not all, of the available BC increase . Any more than that and you may start to see a "bulge" form behind the point, which is not desirable.

Yes. In modern advancements in long range shooting volume 2 Litz showed that pointing not only increase bc but it also increased bc consistency.

You can help them by pointing. As others pointed out, you can also hurt them. Usually the hurt ones are pointed too hard. That extra little bit doesn't yield that much gain. I start by measuring bearing and point. Then I check the bearing again and if it changed, you went too far and bulges the bullet. I never trimmed but separate by OAL before pointing. Seems to work ok for me. Matt
