timing barrel

OK, I think I get it. With the different thread pitches on the inner v. outer of the bushing, you are essentially changing where the effective thread starts and hence where the barrel clocks. Pretty neat.

I too would love to see results!

I would just love to see the bushing

Zeke06 - do you have pictures of the result after you timed the barrel ? Did it shoot the same tiny hole ? Proof that it did work....
I have test fire targets of barrels I’ve indexed that have shot very well. That said I haven't really done any good before and after testing with different types and lots of ammo. After the little bit of testing that I’ve done it’s given me enough proof to show it’s worth doing. I’m not saying that a barrel won’t be competitive if it’s not indexed but it’s just one more little thing that shouldn’t be overlooked.

Picture below is from a 10/22 barrel made from a Shilen 4 groove. With a preferred lot of ammo and some fine tuning that barrel should consistently shoot .250 at 50 yards.

I haven't been able to pull it up, but on 10-20-2008 there is a thread or post on the Daily Bulletin about this.

From Gene:
Actually I just lucked into discovering the differential threads. The internal bushing idea came to me one year as I was driving back from Phoenix. I couldn't wait to get home and try it. The reason I chose 28 tpi for the barrel tenon is because it would take up less space. If not for that, I would have used 18 tpi like the receiver threads and would have been disappointed when I discovered it wouldn't work! Yep, lucked out with that. Jerry Stiller told me it wouldn't work without using a different thread for the internal bushing thread. So I wasted a whole day making one with same threads only to find;,,, "well, son of a gun; he's right, it won't work! Ahh,,, experimenting is so much fun, isn't it?

I told Gene thanks for his offer, but I don't go to the range enough to thoroughly test it out anymore.
