Timing a trigger

I have heard about timing a trigger-exactly what does this mean? If someone orders a drop in trigger for a Remington 700 (Jewell or Bix & Andy) does it need to be timed-or just install and use?

Just install (correctly) and use. ;)

The purpose of timing a trigger/ignition is to achieve smooth bolt close by eliminating cock on close. Thats a simplified explanation.

To back up your statement(s)(BS)-

We've done this before Dan, but we'll do it again. I dont care what it takes to go bang. You seem to have trouble grasping this. I want actions to be capable of setting world records. You want to "bastardize" ;) actions by grinding the cocking piece and reducing the firing pin fall, ok. I doubt I'll see them in the match reports. I feel like you dispute the importance of ignition energy for your own financial reasons. I wont shorten firing pin fall for any price, I have pride in my work.
To sum this up again, theres a difference between enough energy to go bang and enough energy for optimum accuracy potential. This is a pretty well know fact in Benchrest circles.

(as expected, avoid the question like the plague)

Carving a figure in stone, grasped from thin air w/o experience of but a couple actions sums up your experience.

There's more to the shooting sports than 1 discipline.

Short story. Bat MB. .210" pin fall, new spring. Hang fires on wolf primers. Also cci 450s in cooler weather. High fliers caused by lack of ignition energy. Bats have some of the lowest drag on the pin. I timed that action, increased fall to .250 ish and no more issues with any primer, accuracy was improved, no high fliers. That was an obvious case. Not all are so obvious. How many times have you heard of issues cured by replacing a pin spring? An action should not be so close to minimum that 2lb.s of spring degradation causes issues. We have obviously had different experiences, my world is 1k BR.

I agree there are more then one disipline. 1000 yard and other Benchrest shooting shows the ultimate in accuracy. If you never saw a firing pin spring replacement alone improve a rifles accuracy, you are lost. There is more to accurate shooting then the gun going bang. It has been proven over and over. It even shows up more at distance then 100 yards. Matt
