Time to Prep!

Deer season has begun up here. So far I have forgot my bug juice and boot treatment. The bug juice is a serious matter this time of year, the No-See-Ums will drive you absolutely crazy! Next is the boot treatment, I wear leather boots, (Gor-Tex has not been kind to me), so I must keep my boots well oiled. Personality, I like Huberd's Shoe Grease. Put your boot in the oven(on low), let it warm up, then glob on the grease and rub it in. Don't forget to go through your pack and double check everything, first aid kit, signal flairs, GPS, batteries, knives, sharpener, game bags, surveyor tape, and what not.

So get out your gear and start prepping early. The sooner you do it, the less likely you will be sitting in the woods with wet feet getting eaten alive by No-See-Ums.

If I have forgot anything, PLEASE CHIME IN!

Are you using a Havalon knife? I use the Pranta which weights about 3 oz and carry 4-6 extra blades which are sterile and I carry one light weight fixed blade hunting knife. It is a Buck that weights 4.5 oz. How about a Blast Match? Mylar survival blanket? A small candle is nice to have also. Light rope such as shroud line. I also carry a LED AAA Mag Light. I also carry a SPOT locater, it's nice to be able to tell someone your cordinates when you are in trouble. The batteries are Energizer ultimate lithium.

I have been using the same old Buck knife I got for my 12th birthday, and I will be 41 in October. Lots of memories wrapped up in that blade.

Mylar blanket! That's what I was forgetting, those things saved my life 10 years ago, worth every ounce. Never used a blast match, but I always have at least one lighter(smoker).

Got the deer(open) and black bear(opens Sunday) tags, all I need to get is my brownie registration tag before Sept 15th.

For those that hunt in the middle of fawkin' nowhere, might I suggest a free locator beacon? Next time you see a shredded tire pick up a couple pieces. When you have your fire going, slowly add the pieces. Very little is as eye catching, to a search pilot as a column of nice black smoke.

I use a SPOT.

I use a SPOT.

PLBs use different satellites than SPOT and are monitored in many other countries worldwide. They also have had serious coverage issues in mountainous areas. PLBs are monitored free.

I keep some latex disposable gloves, and a cloth cut glove for my left hand just for safety. You might look into a high quality steel, learn to use it and you will never use a knife again without it!

Everything using satellites has trouble with reception in many steep parts of the mountains. just no getting around it. gotta get high for reception sometimes.

The SPOT does the same exact thing as a PLB when the SOS button is depressed. It sends a signal directly to emergency rescue services via satellite. Maybe a PLB would be better for a worldwide traveler, but I have no need for anything other than the SPOT.

The big advantage I like about the SPOT over a PLB is that you can periodically check in to let people know you are ok via email and text message with up to 10 different contacts. Plus you can also set up a custom text message that can alert people about whatever you choose, such as letting them know you harvested an animal, or for a guide to send a plane or horses back in to get you out early, or whatever you can think of. Can also send personal text messages like a cell phone if you desire, but those get a little pricey.

And it's extremely compact, and not that expensive at all. Cheaper than many PLB's
