Time to build a single shot........falling block....

I have a .45 caliber octagon barrel blank sitting around. I think its a badger....1 1/4" at the shank and 1" at the muzzle, 18 twist, its a heavy one.

What I don't have is an action, I'm thinking 45/70 or 45/90.

I guess what I'm asking is what action should I use? And does anyone have a suitable action they want to sell?

My 94 year old friend who got me into short range benchrest shooting is really wanting to build a falling block action over this winter. He was a machinist during his working years and builds every part of his rifles except the barrel and scope.

You can still get roller actions for $350-$450 depending on model. Full rifles are another story.

How handy are you? There's a falling block action that can be built at home if you've some skills. Round breech block. Robust. Not Ruger #1 robust but if that's what you're after there's really only 1 answer.

My friend doesn't have a problem with making square cutout. I gave him a copy of the DeHaas/Miller patent to give him some ideas on one design. I haven't been able to find a complete patent of the Winchester 1885 design.

This is a completely different design. Original. Not my own but one that's on my 'bucket list'.

If you or your friend want to PM me I'll send you information but it's not like a DE Haas design. You have to be able to 'wing-it' and figure out the details.

IMO the designer should have applied for a patent but he is just a hobbiest and not interested in such things. I got the information for free so I'll gladly pass it along.
