I have a Tikka t3 300wsm rifle. I have been thinking about using it for tactical/ practical build. Is it a good starting point? Action feels smooth and tight but I'm not sure if I should bother with it or not? Please give advice.

Tikkas are nice rifles and I have two of them. In PRS, you wont find ,many on the line though. I think it has more to do with the limited selection of stocks and magazines for them compared to other actions. You can certainly do it but if you have options, I'd go with a Rem700 or clone for active tactical competition.
I dedicated my Tikkas to hunting rifles and used my other actions for my tactical builds. That was a win-win for me.

My perspective has been a bit different than FeMan. I haven't shot a match in over a year however in 19 you would see several (2-5) Tikkas out of a 40 person club match. I shot a 6XC and later a 6 CD as a competitor in PRS style club matches with a Tikka in a chassis (MPA). In recent years chassis and stocks are readily available for the Tikka platform,( current rifle 6BRA in a Manners MCS) however aftermarket triggers are still limited choices. Magazines in my experience is more cartridge related. This is my humble opinion only.

Sell the .300 WSM to a serious Elk Hunter and Buy a .243 Win , Set the bbl back, a bit and Re-chamber to,..
6 Creed, 6 XC ( my choice ) or, 6 mm SLR !
87 gr Berger HVLD's will HUM in, a 1-10 TW !
THIS would be the "cheap way" to,.. "Play at", some PRS shooting.
Might ask, Stomp 442,.. what to "do" with this Rifle
Or, build an expensive, dedicated, PRS Rifle as noted by FeMan above.

A friend and competitor is shooting a Sherman 6.5 short action magnum. I'm not sure if anyone makes a prefit in this caliber. Look it it up! He was shooting ELR and PRS style matches with same rifle and was doing well. We shot together recently in practice and I was impressed with the cartridge. This was not a Tikka rifle however. Do a search locally and see if you can locate a smith familiar with Tikka. There are a couple in central Mt that have worked on my rifles.
If I were you I would shoot what you have in some informal matches this year and see if you like it. I have never owned a 300 WSM but it has a good reputation as an accurate round.

I have a 300WSM not Tikka T3 but the Danish Schultz& Larsen. comparable with the T3 since they also use one action length = standard length 30-06. To seat the heaver bullets properly you would need to get a longer mag and perhaps throat the barrel a bit. The 300wsm is easy to tune and get to shoot really good.
Sub moa at 1000 yrs is not a problem. I am running 1:9 twist rate for 215,230 Berger hybrids + the Hornady ELD match 225gr.

T3 is a great place to start. Your larger diameter Magnum bolt face maybe worth more to someone trying to build a LR or hunting rifle off the tikka action. You should easily be able to trade for a something you could use with 6 or 6.5mm caliber. A bolt handle upgrade, new spring and dropping it into a chassis of your choice will all make that much more fun to shoot.

Tikkas are sweet little rifles and make for excellent builds. If you wanted to stick with the action you have the new darling on the market is the 6.5 PRC. It doesn't do much more than a 6.5-284 but the few I have done load development on have shot fantastic with H1000. Barrel life may not be the ideal with the type of shooting you are planning to do but it will work. The other option would be to stick with the .300WSM and load it with some H4350 and some High BC 155s like the Berger 155.5 or the Sierra TMK. Put a good brake on it and be good to go.

As I get older, felt recoil/number of rounds I expect to shoot is also a consideration when deciding what cartridge to use for any shooting activity. Running a suppressor/brake greatly expands the list of cartridges I would be able to tolerate when high volume shooting or 180 gr + bullets. At 60, I don't think I want to shoot 20+ rounds of short mag 180 gr ammo from a "non threaded hunting rifle". Shooting suppressed the last couple years has definitely spoiled me.
I used a tikka T3 tactical in .223 Rem for a tactical match. It was an awesome rifle. Everything stock on it expect manners PRS1, Cerakote, and muzzle brake. Your issue will be bolt face. Not sure you want to take that punishment for 200 rounds.
Are the Tikka t3x actions the same? Or is the action from the tactical Tikka stronger than the one from a hunting Tikka?

Actually there are excellent aftermarket triggers available for the T3/T3X. KRG has a two stage Midas Trigger and Bix'n Andy has a single stage trigger. I've shot both and they are excellent, if a bit different...
Timney has a two stage trigger as well, however, I've yet to try one and hence won't comment.
KRG has a choice of a top safety or a bottom mounted paddle safety. I prefer the bottom mount(fwiw). My two KRG SOTIC rifles which have the bottom paddle safety and I've found them very intuitive once you get used to it.

Recently did a little work on a Tikka T3 for buddy. Bedded the action in a new carbon fiber stock and did some trigger work. There’s a method I figured out to get the factory triggers down to a nice safe and consistent 1.5 on pull. If you want lower than that, you need to go with a custom trigger. There’s not much metal in the middle that contacts the stock so I just bedded front and rear rather than full receiver bedding like I would on a 700 style action.
All in all they are nice little actions. Tikka factory barrels are pretty small tho. If having a custom barrel installed you would want to have the Tenon face turned down so it can accept a 1.200” barrel breech.
