Tikka barrel break in ?

Do a forum search and you’ll find 50 different ways to do it and no consensus on which way right and a dozens of arguments about it, lol. As long as it’s a combination of shooting and cleaning of some sort there is no wrong way.

I’ve answered this before for guys and was criticized for it but when I got my T3 Varmint I ran JB through it for about a half hour with a nylon brush.

When straight to shooting. No copper.

As mentioned we all have our on methods and they all seem to work for us.

I have a half-doaen Tikka T-3's and my method has been - mount a scope, shoot enough shots to get the scope zeroed to my desired point of impact, fire 5 shots for confirmation, then clean the barrel - Barrel break in is done at that point.

I have never had an issue with a Tikka copper fouling and really see no reason for an extended cleaning regimen with them.

what is JB?

JB bore paste sold through Brownell's

Cuts Through Toughest Bullet Jacket & Powder Fouling - Can't-Run Paste Formulation - Cushioned Abrasive Action Leaves Bores Sparkling - Won't "Eat" Stock Finishes

The original, time-proven formula developed by Jim Brobst and produced under exclusive license. J-B has been getting burned-on, caked-in powder residue and copper jacket fouling out of gun barrels since the 1960’s, and hasn’t damaged an inch of rifling yet. Today, J-B once again proves itself a champion by the way it easily cleans the dirtiest, moly-fouled barrels.

A unique combination of ingredients and a one-of-kind, multi-step mixing process give J-B its special characteristics. They work together to cushion the abrasive action; the soft paste liquefies as you use it, then wipes out of the bore easily. The non-embedding feature means there’s no abrasive residue left behind which might keep "cutting" after you’ve finished cleaning.

J-B has been a favorite on gunsmiths’ benches for years, as a "magic" cure for customer guns that "...just won’t shoot anymore". These pros know that a good scrubbing with J-B often restores accuracy. Match and varmint shooters put a lot of rounds down range, many of those using moly coated bullets. The large amounts of copper fouling and the burned-in moly can create a cleaning nightmare; J-B makes short work of it. Use J-B with the Lewis Lead Remover to get the last speck of leading out of pistol bores. Shotguns combine lead, powder and plastic fouling to really throw patterns off; J-B cleans it all out quickly and easily.

Editors Note: The statements above are all from marketing materials. Use all abrasives with caution. If you DO use JB, get it ALL out of the barrel before shooting.

I used JB regularly when I started shooting decades ago, with ARs and hunting rifles. Then I found better ways to clean -- including Wipe-Out applied right after I finish shooting and the barrel is still warm. I rarely use JB at all anymore.

"These pros know that a good scrubbing with J-B often restores accuracy". And there was a guy at our club who was messing up his barrels prematurely by really aggressive JB scrubbing every 40 rounds. It was comical. Most of us could get about 2000 rounds of great accuracy from a 6mm barrel -- he was getting about 600-700. As with all things in life and shooting "moderation is key".

As for Lewis Lead Remover, I have found Lead-Out from the makers of Wipe-Out to be more effective. YMMV.

Why would he need JB for a new barrel ?? " J-B has been getting burned-on, caked-in powder residue and copper jacket fouling out of gun barrels since the 1960’s, and hasn’t damaged an inch of rifling yet."

I wish I had kept my e-mail from Douglas barrels which asked "Why would you void any chance of warranty consideration of your new barrel by running an abrasive through it ? Their words not mine.

what is the barrel break in procedure for a Tikka T3x varmint in 223 cal ?

Every rifle is different, but I just broke in a Krieger 6BR barrel. Here is how I did it.

1) I shoot one shot, clean carbon with Bore Tech C4, clean copper with Bore Tech Cu+ copper cleaner, until I get no green on the patch.
2) Repeat 1) above.

It took 5 shots, after which it did not show any copper.I then proceeded to shoot my groups.
