So I was offered a new tikka arctic in 308 . Iv never seen one till now , I really like it .
Only thing stopping me is the stock I have now and I want to use . is made for a factory tikka t3 varmint barrel contour. I can't find any info on the arctic barrel dimensions . Is is close to the tikka varmint contour? Anyone know ?
I almost want to buy it and use it as is lol its really neat and would make a great hunting rifle probably with hand loads

Part of the cost and draw of the artic is the stock, otherwise get a tikka varmint in 308 and add your own better iron sights

Only tikka varmint in 308 iv seen is about 1700$ and iv no idea what the specs are on the new tikka varmint. It's nothing like the old style form what I know

The CTR matches it even more, same magazines as the arctic and around $1000
So there's a good chance that the barrel on this arctic rifle is a tad smaller than the old style t3 varmint ? If so it would fit in this stock I have !

Yup, Zoran. It just looks like a gussied up CTR. A look at Eurooptic gives this:

I had no idea.. only thing thay did was add iron sights it looks like . I do like the iron sights tho. I can use a scope with a QD mount and remove it if needed or wanted
Yup. It’s a typical marketing move. Change a few features, call it a new COOL name and charge more. “If it costs more, it must be better” is used quite often.

True .. only reason I consider the artic was it was offered to me for 900$ . That being said I could probably spend the 900 on a custom barrel for my rem700 action in 308 and it would shoot great .
Thinking about a sendero conture, maby a m24 . But definitely a 1in10 or 11 twist. I'll only be loading 150g , 168g , possibly 175

Well, it's not 100% marketing... This rifle was developed specifically for the Royal Canadian Mounties. So many of the features were required by that organization.

They needed a rifle that was usable 100s of miles away from civilization or the nearest gas station store. So it had to have

Weather resistance
Compact enough for easy use.
Backup irons in case of scope failure.
A cartridge that is available at any place that sold ammo.
Tikkas unquestionably reliable function
I can't remember what else.

The Tikka Arctic is simply the civilian version of that rifle configuration. If you don't have the same requirements as the mounties, don't buy it. I would strongly suggest not buying it if you want a different stock or plan major changes. You are paying for the whole package. Stock costs more, the iron sights cost more, etc.

Personally if one fell in my lap at a good price I would buy it in an instant. With no intention of modification.

Makes a lot of sense. I'm looking to make something a medium weight hunting/whatever rifle .. id probably be better off build my rem700 and spend the money on a barrel . Plan for the 700 action is build a 700 police with 24in barrel .

A buddy of mine has the CTR in 308.
He fires that thing 10 shots in a row without giving any thought to barrel cooling. That thing shoots into a ragged hole @100 !
His CTR in 6.5 CM does the same thing with boring monotony. It seems that you can hardly go wrong with the Tikkas.

I'm starting to see that lol . I just always seen the thinner or smaller barrels in the past never could hold groups good much after 5shots or so . But guess tikka has solved that problem with thinner barrels

That's been my experience with the lighter barrels also. I believe the CTR has a little more meat to it and is also on the shorter side, helping with stiffness.

Buy it!!! You won't regret!
I had a CTR in .308 and it was a half-MOA rifle for all of the original barrel lifetime!
Tikka are making some really awesome barrels, they may be 5 percent slower than most others, but they are just incredible accurate, with pretty much anything you put through them.
My factory barrel was swapped to a Lothar Walther, in the same contour, after some 5000 rounds.

So what your telling me is I should build off a tikka lol

So what your telling me is the tikka ctr will shoot just as good as a custom barrel 700.
It's almost like buying a custom build rifle off the shelf

I might get a ctr in 308 . I have one of the new krg echo stocks .Only down side is it's made for the factory t3 plastic mag and trigger guard. So I'd have to swap that out .

Hmmmm
Depends if you already have the action….
A custom barreled 700 can be pretty darned accurate.
Better do both and have double the fun! :D
I have a trued 700 action here i was gonna use for the 700 police style build .
I might get a ctr in 308 if thay shoot that good , only down side is the stock I want to put it in only accepts the factory t3 plastic mag and trigger guard like on the t3 light .the new krg echo stock

Here is the new krg echo stock with my older tikka t3 varmint in 223 .
The barrel channel won't handle much more than the varmint barrel contour tho
