Tight chamber .308 Win

I have a 30BR rifle I bought with a .330 chambered Krieger. I also have a .308 Win F/TR rifle put together by Fred at Sharp Shooter Supply with a standard chamber.

I turn my necks on the .308 Win to the bare minimum just to try to get even neck tension. Even at this minimum, the brass gets worked pretty good every time it's fired. For example, when I shoot a round from the 30BR and extract the case, there's neck tension if I take a bullet and try to push it into the neck. On my .308, the bullet will fall right through to the bottom of the case.

I guess I'm looking for 1) A good mfgr for a bore chamber reamer and 2) a good specification (.330? .331? .332?) for a neck diameter?

I'll likely send it to Fred at Sharp and have him make me a new BRUX barrel.

Thanks

Pacific Tool and Gage is one option for the reamer and I'd go with the .330 neck so that I only need one neck turning setup. I don't know if a 308 will be too hot for a tight neck like that, but if not, then you're golden.

Thanks, I've written them.

Read everything you can about the 30BR here: http://www.accurateshooter.com/cartridge-guides/30br/ including the other references you'll see in the article.

Go with the .330 chamber.

Dave Kiff at Pacific Tool and Gauge can provide the Robinett Reamer.

Consider another Krieger barrel chambered by Ronnie Long.

Stay with the proven science, and you'll be way ahead.

The reason it falls right thru in the .308 there is far more clearence for expansion than in the 30BR only .003 to .004 loaded round, most 308 standard no turn is .340, measure your fired brass that will tell you close what you have, shilen shows you can get a .332 neck in .308

Doug,

Before you go reinventing the wheel, you might want to consider this: none of the common/popular 'match' .308 reamers ('95 Palma, 2011 Fullbore, 2013 F/TR, etc.) use a tight neck, and none of them are set up for super-thin turned necks. Ya think there might be a reason for that? We aren't shooting BR here; F/TR gets down in the dirt and keeping the elements entirely out of the gun isn't always possible.

I think you'd be better off annealing periodically/regularly if you're that worried about work-hardening the necks from the 'excessive' expansion/sizing in a normal match chamber with .341-.343 dimensions.

YMMV,

Monte
