Throw rugs -- Be Careful Folks

The doctors and the other 'geezer experts' have been warning me for 17 years about the danger of tripping on throw rugs. Well this AM it happened, trip and down for more than the standard '8 count'. Call the wonderful "911 EMTs" after a complete check, a small amount to eat, pills and insulin, off to the hospital for X-Rays. Bones OK, pulled muscles, left leg useless, can't hold weight. Help into the car there, we called the fire dept. for help getting into the house. They just picked me up, 2 of them in the 'locked arms chair carry, into the house and into bed. What a great group of people taking care of an old man. They were all driving 'company' cars and trucks so I couldn't offer them a beer. So I'm laid up for awhile, the bathroom may be a problem, but I'm busy singing "The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow" (Little Orphan Annie). So my friends, Get Rid of the Throw Rugs, NOW, RIGHT NOW.

Yep, getting old isn't for everyone.

George.

Get better soon, I hope the leg function rapidly returns. You'll be looking for hand rails in the shower soon.

Anything is better for geezers and worth doing than falling.

As a former paramedic and geezer, I know.

Thank you DocBill, you are one of our better angels!!! We have the shower and bathroom bars. Gettin old ain't for sissies !!! Couple he falling with a couple of other issues, it will be an interesting time a coming. Just got a walker with a seat last Thursday, crash course in operating coming. I was hoping to make it in to a street rod, lowered, dual pipes, mag wheels maybe even chop the top. It's bright orange like the 56 Ford P.U. I had about60 years ago. Thanks again, my legs not good but my spirit is good, just a new adventure.

I'm only in my 40s but having blown up my knees several times and multiple surgeries I know what its like to be down with a bum leg. Pro tip, baby wipes in the bathroom. Leaning over trying to use paper in the wrong hand just doesn't feel clean after, lol! I also would prop my foot up on the trash can while seated on the throne so I didn't put pressure on it.

Be sure to follow doctors orders for recovery and get to a PT sooner than later if you can.

Got a call at work that Grandma was down and the wife had to call the fire dept to get her back up.
Told the boss, back in a few. Got home and there as a couple of fire trucks out front. Stepped inside and there were a couple of 250 pound go rillas standing there looking at a 90 pound grandma down on the bathroom floor trying to decide how to get her up.
I stepped in, snatched her up and said, "that's how you do it", jumped back in my truck and was back at work in 15 minutes. Thank the Good Lord for volunteer fire fighters. ;) ;)
And just so you know, it ISN'T just throw rugs that'll get you. Getting older will do it every day!! Remember the things you USED to be able to do??:oops: That's real "history" for you.

I’ve noticed everything is getting heavier.

3 weeks out from rotator surgery (72 yrs.old). I slipped on damp grass and stuck my arm out to break the fall, only thing that broke was most of the tendons in my shoulder, including the bicep muscle and tendon under my arm pit. I start therapy in 2 days and it will likely last for 5 months.
So I know about getting older and tripping, slipping and falling.
We just can't do what we used to do.

I have always called them death rugs even from a young age. I am only 43, but moms and wives will always pick "cute" over practicality. I spent thousands on the floor in the new house. Endless hours of why she likes this one over this one. And now, rugs, rugs everywhere. Makes no sense to me.

Across the road neighbor was delivered a couple of 6'x3' by 6" flat boxes. Metal shed inside. Thought I would help him get them inside his fence. Kinda hard to hold onto.
2 trips got them to their new resting place.
Started walking back across to my house and was HUFFING and PUFFING??
Now I know what sitting on my AZZ after retiring 10/15 years ago does to ones body.

more like a year and a half, some of the THERAPY made it worse, Go SLOW as the pain subsides longer stretching times up to a minute or two held got easier and the pain overall reduced, sadly you never regain full strength. For the first time in my life I listened to my little girl, When she was in high school she was the cheerleading captain these little girls had a stretching regime that makes a grown man cry, it worked far better than any doctor or therapist, and yes I did whimper

Hope you heal quickly and well.
I use rubber horse stall mats. Maybe 1 1/4 inch thick.
Biggest problem was lugging them into the house. The weight is insane. Roughly 4x8
They are over 100 lbs! But work perfectly and I’ll never have to move them.

stretching regime that makes a grown man cry
I've found if it hurts too much, it is actually straining the muscle a bit which tightens it up even more.
It is frustrating - I'm just not able make the stretching go faster.
I've been stretching 1- 1 1/2 hours every day for the past 10 years. My range of motion still isn't where it was even 30 years ago. [Now 81].

I feel yah, I haven't flopped lately but chit can happen quickly...Hope you get to feeling better soon

Yep!!

I did three tours in RVN, MAC-V SOG and then G Company Abn, attached to the Americal. Never even got a scratch. Two years ago the VA has me in to remove my appendix. Combo of Morphine and a Sedative, I have a Grade AAA+ flashback, jump out of the rack not remembering where I am, and land on my backside. For sixteen months they keep telling me it is a severe muscle tear. NOT! I get a new NP, and she orders an MRI. Next day, she gives me the news. Compression Fracture of L3 my lower spine. For sixteen months since we have been playing "Go Fish" between surgery (Fusion) or everything else.
I saw enough ugly in 25 months and 10 days in I Corps to last me a lifetime. God loves me, and my wife of 34+ years loves me, even still likes me as a person. So I try to be easy going. But...
Never mind.

God Bless the many friends I have made here,

ISS
