Throat Problems Question?

Hey Guys, I just finished my first barrel chambering project and I've got sort of a problem, My throat is so short that when I load the bullets to touch the riflings I get inconsistent bullet lengths due to the fact that the powder is pushing the bullet back out. Basically the rifling depth is 2.750" and I start to crush powder at 2.795" and I've got an overall magazine lenght of 2.825" is there a reamer that I can get that I can lengthen the throat to allow the bullets to be seated longer.

If you decide to change it, PT&G (Dave Kiff) makes a throating reamer that will do what you want to do...

.................... or alternatively change the powder so you don't have such heavy charge compression. Cheaper!

Once you cut that chamber, you can't go back so if it was me I'd "think on it a bit" before I did anything. ;)

Thankyou very much Guys, I'll give Mr. Kiff a call I've tried 3 different powders same problem and I don't want to go below a 120gr. bullet (it's a 260 ackley)

If you decide to go the throating reamer route, you might want to consider purchasing a reamer micro-stop. Specifically, the one that Rusty Stud manufacturers.

It will allow you to precisely control the depth that you run the reamer into the chamber. You could set up your cartridge/bullet combination for the exact lead that you desire and cut it to the that dimension.

It is a great tool.

4-D Products has rental throaters (and reamers, go gauges, and most hand cutting gunsmithing tools for that matter). They always send good, sharp reamers that have worked for me on a number of occasions. Just GO SLOW as 1/2 a turn will cut a significant amount of throat. Google them under 'reamer rentals'.

Kiff's Uni-Throater comes with it's own "t" handle and adjustable stop. You don't even have to do the throat in the lathe once the chamber is done.

Kiffs Unit throater is a great tool but does not come with a stop. I recomend you make a rear bushing to fit the bolt race with a .4375 ID for the Unit throat driver. Make a stop and use feeler gauges or buy a micrometer adjustable stop. A word to the wise control your throating reamer depth. It will remove rifling like a hot knife in warm butter. Once it is gone it is gone. To much and a set back or barrel replacement are required.

There is a relationship to COAL and magazine capacity. Long bullets are designed to be shot single shot or in long actions.

Build your rifle with COAL in mind. Good planning will go a long ways to your shooting success. It is better to match all your components then build your rifle. Custom rifles are built with a specific purpose in mind. All around rifles are not usually well suited multiple shooting discilpines as one made for a specific purpose.

Kiff's Uni-throater does come with a stop. It comes with a t-handle, a sleeve which fits in the chamber, and brass adjustment nuts to control the depth of the cut. You can throat a barrel without taking the barrel off of the action, or use it when the barrel is in the lathe.

It does have a very fine adjustment feature.

Thanks Wayne, I ordered the Kiff's Uni-throater and it'll be here a week or two. You guys have made a nightmare a do-able reality! Thanks for all the help.

AS stated GO Slow you got a lot of good advise. I've own'd a lot of rifles with throats that are too long and most of the time they don't shoot as well. You don't have a long neck in that case to work with.

Wayne-

You're exactly correct. I bought one of PT&G's Uni-throater in .264 to lengthen the throat/leade on my 6.5 Grendel. Dave K. walked me through the whole process over the phone, prior to purchasing the U-T.

I was able to accurately cut the throat to achieve the desired seating depth that I wanted.

I've got .080 to play with before I go past the magazine's overall length and if I can do half that or just a little more than half I'll solve my inconsistent seating depths and powder problems. I didn't realize this would be problem with this this short little case. It does however shoot the 107 gr MK's very well out of a thin barreled hunting rifle :o. Extremely low ES and SD. I just want the ability to shoot 130 class bullets. I really appreciate all your guys help.

I will ask Dave the next time I call him where my Uni Throater Stop is. Because the one I got from him did not come with a stop.

I made bushings for several bolt diameters that are long enough to extend past the action tang.
Then I use the MARS to measure my throat cutting.
