Threading barrel with hand tools

LRH

Silver $$ Contributor
Are there commonly located hand tools that can be used to thread a barrel for a muzzle brake?

Thanks. I appreciate the cautionary note. What I was wondering is, what type of die is required?

I tried it long ago and regretted it. Was not able to cut a concentric thread with a hand turned die. It is not that expensive to do it correctly, use a gunsmith.

Thanks 5spd. I stopped in at Brownells earlier and the chat guy said the same thing. Don't have a lathe. maybe there is pilot that will keep the threads straight?

For what you'll spend on tools to do a mediocre (or worse) job- not to mention your time, a smith will do it faster, cheaper, more precisely.
I get being a stubborn D-I-Yer...that's what makes guys...guys.

But as Dirty Harry once said: "A man's got to know his limitations..."

I'm going to guess that any pilot that would guide the threading die would cause enough damage to the muzzle to require re-crowning.

You need the barrel turned to the diameter for the thread. Just have it done right. Being cheep will cost you more a lot of the time. I've seen a few die threading jobs. ive seen brakes shot off
