Thread OD Calculation Question

I have a 700 action that I trued up that was about as crooked as any I have ever worked on. It took a bunch (probably .030 or slightly more) to get it corrected. The ID of the action threads now measure 1.018 and are 16 pitch of course. Anyone have the appropriate calculation for the OD of the barrel tennon based on that dimension. Ive looked through my machinists handbook and can't find the info. Thanks in advance for the help.

It's all in Machinieries Handbook but IIRC it is expressed as flat width and you have to extrapolate height from that on a 60° v thread.
I think you can come up with the answer using this tool. If nothing else, it's still a great site. Put it on your phone or computer. You can thank me later. Great tool!

Hi STS,

Someone way smarter than me will likely be along any minute now, but I calculate (using trig), a diameter of 1.129", going to a sharp point, using your 1.018 diameter in the original post.

Basically, the thread depth for a given pitch doesn't change, regardless of the diameter of whatever you are threading.

I would turn a stub to 1.120" and see how that works out.

Hope this is useful (and perhaps even correct :) )

...and keep your stubs. Measure them with wires and engrave the PD into the stub. Now you have a thread gauge.

I turned the tennon 1.092 and the thread crest has a nice little flat. Things turned out well. Now I have to turn that thing around and thread it for the suppressor. That won't be a problem. Thanks to those who took time to offer advise.
