Thread end of Winchester Model 70 300 Win Mag

First off, new member here and thanks in advance for any help.

Have a 300 win mag and want to thread the end of the barrel. No gunsmith in my area and have threaded ends of barrels before. However, I am wondering about the end of the win mag as the barrel has a small taper to it. The muzzle brake I have now fits over the end of the barrel maybe 1/4 inch or so before it the taper is larger than the diameter of the brake.

Normally use an annular cuter to cut down the barrel then thread the end. I am guessing I still use annular cutter and then thread it like normal but don’t know if that first 1/4 inch will be cut or threaded since it seems small already?

Any ideas/advice?

Even if it cuts a thread you really need a shoulder on the barrel to butt up to. I would get a few opinions, in person, before you attempt this. The odds of a bullet strike are very high with the way you are thinking of doing this job.

Just my two cents but, it looks like that's a sporter profile on that barrel and I wouldn't advise removing any metal from the end of it. I would either get a clamp on thread adapter or a clamp on brake.

Turn the end of the barrel to 9/16 diameter, about 11/16 long, and thread it 32 tpi. make sleeve to fit this which is large enough on the OD to thread for the brake and leave a shoulder for the brake to butt up against. Now the brake can be installed normally. I don't know the length or even the diameter of the threads on your brake and might revise the figures I have given once I had that info. WH
