Thread depth w/ wires - what measurement do you aim for on a muzzle thread?

Are you finishing the a die to get the thread pushed up to the shoulder, or to get final dimension?

I thread muzzles for people who have ordered suppressors and of course it'll be up to a year before they get the suppressor and they want to use it the minute it comes in. So they get the muzzle threaded beforehand. It's pretty easy to get the muzzle threaded to about 95% thread depth and then run an adjustable die onto the thread to finish it to depth and I don't need the suppressor to do it. You have to set the die to begin with but after that, no problem. I normally have a relief between the thread and shoulder for stopping the cutting tool so I don't use the die for cutting a finished thread to the shoulder.

I have no problem with using thread wires. Put a piece of paper underneath what you're measuring in case you drop a wire. I take 2 wires and place them on the top of the thread and hold them there with the micrometer, then take the remaining wire and place it on the bottom while closing the mic. Works pretty well. You can also put a dab of grease on the wires to hold them in place. You can measure most external threads with wires which aren't very expensive. Mics are faster and easier but far more expensive, take your pick.

Ring gages certainly do the job, but I've always looked at them as being used in a high-production environment for QC. No way to justify the costs of the gages- and the standards. Ring gages wear from use, and you need a certified standard for each one to get them adjusted correctly.

Depending on size, hundreds of dollars for each go and no-go, plus a standard for each one.
Thousands of dollars for just the commonly used 2A and 3A sizes. A few thread mikes will do what's needed with just a couple of extra minutes time.

I supply and fit quite alot of sound moderators here in the UK,they are very popular with most rifle disciplines.vermin, deer and target shooters alike.lots of different makes of moderators available.forward mounted and sleeve down the barrel ones are the most popular and everyone wants a different make.i have found thread specs can vary slightly from different manufacturers, especially the metric ones..M14,M15,M18.one can make a thread protector.e.g M18 with a brand new Dormer Tap,cut thread on barrel to suit and some moderators can be tight.i now have screw ring gauges in Unf,Unef and the metric ones.every thread is cut to spec and everything fits nice.also everyone want the muzzle threading on a rebarrel.
