Thread a Stock Barrel for Remage System

I'm purchasing a Pac Nor Remage barrel for a short action 700, and I'm wondering how tough/expensive it would be to have other inexpensive take off barrels threaded to work with the same action. jd

WHY go through the trouble and cost to have a factory take off barrel setup for a nut? The factory barrel will probably headspace on a factory action and lug, I've done it several times already, the lettering never lines up but most head space just fine.

Well, I guess IF it happened to head space correctly that would be fine. I just assumed that the odds were slim of that happening. jd

I recently put a later production factory sporter bbl on my late 60s early 70s 40X rec and the headspace was too tight by about .005". Most factory cartridges put too much pressure on the locking lugs when lowering the bolt handle and some didn't even come close to closing. I moved the shoulder forward to suit a thicker lug.

Here is the real issue. Compared to the std set up with a torque shoulder machined into the bbl the Savage style nut is a PITA. I got my start in advanced gun tinkering via the Savage but once I got a lathe and started using bbls with a torque shoulder I quickly dropped the whole nut thing EXCEPT for a specific application which is a 40X rimfire. Here I always will use a Pacnor nut. But for everything else having a torque shoulder makes changing the bbl a 5 min job if you have an internal action wrench.

Since you would have to pay a gunsmith to lathe off the existing torque shoulder and add the extended section of threads to use a nut why not just pay him to move the existing torque shoulder to suit a thicker lug ? Then changing that bbl is quick and easy. You would also be ahead to have him pin the lug.

With the above being said, you might get lucky and the bbls you have or buy may headspace just fine on your rec so you should always check it first.
