Remage Question For You Smiths

I was wondering if it is possible to take a stock Remington barrel and extend the existing Remington threads to the length required to use that barrel/chamber with the Remage nut system.

Easy? Expensive?? Impossible??? jd

Easy if you can do it yourself . If you need to have someone else do it , it would only be worth it if it was an aftermarket barrel with few rounds thru it . It would also need /should be a non 338 lap cartridge .

My interest is in picking up one of the many "like new" factory take-off barrels that are so inexpensive, and using it with the remage nut system. Light weight sporter/hunter -- custom bench rest quality not necessary.

Was just wondering what might be charged for the service. jd

It might be cheaper to pick up a thicker than stock aftermarket recoil lug and then adjust the barrel shoulder for proper fit in your action. The main issue is the time that it takes to set up the barrel in the lathe. As out of whack as factory chambers can be the question becomes what to use as a reference for proper alignment. The other option would be to measure and then reduce the thickness of the custom lug to the correct dimension for that barrel and action.

I'm pickin up what you're layin down. I suppose that it's also possible that you might accidently get a barrel that head spaces acceptably..?? jd

Yes. A friend who is a gunsmith said that he has never had one not work out as long as nothing had been modified. That was some time ago.
