Thoughts on this Savage 10 Receiver Finish?

Looking for some honest shooter feedback on a Savage Model 10 receiver I refinished. The factory finish is horrible and I used scotch bright to remove it as well as polish it out a bit (rough from factory). I was going to Cerakote, but thought I'd take a try and getting an antique bronze patina look. Used different temperature variations and application techniques of Oxpho-Blue. Bronze look is there along with a "case hardened" look to it with the color variation.

Should I go to Cerakote or keep this look? Very unique and I love that antique rifle patina, just curious what other shooters think.

Thanks for looking, Ryanfullsizeoutput_14d0.jpegfullsizeoutput_14d7.jpegfullsizeoutput_14d2.jpeg

Good job, I have a few Savage 10 actions, the finish is the same as yours, pretty rough under the blueing. If you had time to do it, I'd coat it as every time I use the home blueing kits, they'd come up great for a while but never lasted too long.

Yes that was what I was thinking. I also thought about hitting it with a coat of satin clear. Thanks for the reply. Ryan

I like it, and I don't care for cerakote...so if you like it, keep it!

That’s where I’m at too...not a big fan of Cerakote but it’s better than the terrible factory finish. Satin automotive grade clear coat over the bluing? That should stabilize the bluing from wearing too quickly. I think I want to try this before I go with the boring Cerakote.

Thoughts on this would be appreciated! Ryan

I wouldn't clear it for same reasons I don't like cerakote...but that's just me.

Your refinish is far superior to the factory finish. Was it a varmint action to begin with? I have a fairly new one in 30-06 and it has a high polish blue job that is amazing for such a cheap gun when it was made. Don't get me wrong I have all kinds of savages and love them all but some of the factory finishes are based on cheap cheaper and cheapest. Leave it like it is and it will darken with age .

Actually this is the only Savage action I own (Kind of a Tikka guy). The factory finish was aweful, I purchased it second hand in a custom BR setup and I want to turn it into a chassis based Repeating varmint gun (22BR?).
So I’m not sure which level it was. The mechanics on it are great, no need to true it up as the lugs have nice uniform contact and everything was very square when I indicated it in my lathe...it previously shot very well as a BR. It will never look like a Weatherby Mark V! ;)
