Thoughts on Power bottle labels

Was reading the articles on gun blow ups from using the wrong powder in say a rifle with pistol powder. Was thinking about maybe a safe way to label powder that might save an accident. What if a company on their label would place a pic say of a rifle in a small but easy to see symbol on the front of the bottle and it would be a rifle in a green tag then on top of the bottle before you screw the lid of it would have a bright red sticker with a pic of a shot gun and a pistol with a bright red round tag with a X over it that would mean not to be used in anything but a rifle. The same say with a pistol powder on the front with a green label and on top a red round disk on the cap with a pic of shot gun and rifle in bright red and a X as a better warning to catch the reloaders attention. Just thinking!
Aren't you glad you made this post?

1) write [Name of Powder] on tape and stick it on cap of powder hopper that you filled up with it. Discard label only after you have emptied the powder from the hopper.
> in addition to label on powder throw/hopper, the open canister of powder remains on bench until finished using it and after having emptied surplus powder out of hopper.
2) write “Opened” on tape and place on lid of any powder canister that has been opened/seal broken. This way you completely finish using the canister before accidentally opening a new one.
3) if powder is for a specific cartridge or rifle or other purpose then write this on tape and place it across front of powder canister
4) if I have a bunch of powder canisters that are from different batches (same type of powder) then I add a label on each canister indicating a relation (1/4, 2/6, 3/3, etc.) and I group the batches together. This help remind me as I change batches to do a small work-up to test the energy/combustion of the new batch.

I like low tech … simple system that I can quickly & easily confirm. I don’t have to check a spreadsheet or make educated guess based on powder kernel shape color, size or smell :)

Well
The old "red light" system. I would view it as a good thing. There are many reasons why those types of accidents happen and the reality is that few people go through life not making mistakes. So, one additional warning signal will certainly do no harm. After all signage is a common way to

convey information to people, often of hazards, we see it daily. Although it's well known a few pay it little attention, but others do of course.

Saying "You cannot legislate against stupid." Is in its self silly. If it were true intersections would not have lights and we would driving on any side of the road. And of course a driver's licences would not exist.

Thing to remember is that pistol powders can, if used correctly be used in rifles, so sort of mixed messages there.

You have to remember that every step in the reloading process, your life could be at risk if you fail to stay focused on what you are doing. After what I have seen, it's hard to forget. Anyway, I hope people don't have to learn the hard way. Especially when thinking that substituting one powder for another is a good idea or it should work. I think it happens more often than you would think.

Powders like green dot, red dot, unique, etc are suitable for shot gun or hand gun. Labels for those would be tough. Like others, I only have one powder at a time on the bench and empty the measure into the bottle before another is used. Powder has to be put up before caliber or powder changes.

Having blown up a rifle, I can attest to the facts of only one powder on the bench at a time and no distractions. Someone interrupts you, stop immediately!
Mine was an interruption. Loading reduced velocity loads of pistol powder in rifle cases.
What doesn’t kill you, makes you smarter.
Cutting melted brass from your lip, priceless.
I still load pistol powder in rifle cartridges, but I am waaay more adhered to the above truths.
No label would have helped.
I always empty the measure when done.

This has been an interesting discussion. I didn't think the OP's idea about labeling powder bottles a certain way for his identification was a bad idea, only that he wanted the manufacturer to do it for him. Reloading and shooting are not risk free, but they are both safer than going to and from the range. Cars and cell phones both have rules which are ignored all the time. You are much more likely to be hit by someone on their phone than a range incident. There are minute warnings on almost everything now which nobody reads and tools with so called safety devices on them which makes it more difficult to use them instead of more safe. How about taking some personal responsibility for your own actions. Make a plan and then follow that plan with no deviation, adjust as necessary, focus, eliminate distractions, don't reload when you are tired or in a hurry. Happy reloading and shooting

Get some of the 1 inch color circle dot stickers. R red rifle, S silver shotgun, P purple pistol (handguns of all types) and put one on the lid and one or more on the bottle. Won't have pretty icons on them but will differentiate equally well otherwise.

Yeah. Then, I gotta remember what each of the colors are. It might work/be helpful if all the rifle cases were red, pistol cases were purple, etc.
