thoughts on bedding a chassis system.

It's not clear if you mean a "V" Block chassis, a barrel clamp chassis or a tube gun type.

But, I built my latest gun around a SSS tracker stock, a Savage PTA and a Bartlein barrel chambered by a PT&G 284 WIN reamer AND a Whidden V Block.

This was not my first bedding job, I have bedded and old Savage 1958 110, a VZ24 Mauser action into a laminated stock, a BVDSS laminated stock with a Savage PTA which required filling the magazine hole with a laminated plywood plug and drilling action screw holes for a PTA. Then I moved the PTA with its new Bartlein 6BRX barrel into a SSS Dog Tracker. The 6BRX is shooting like gang busters still even with the barrel set back once!

But, I couldn't get the 7mm to shoot! I had to mill out the new SSS Tracker stock to fit the Whidden V Block. I should say, hogged it out using a bench drill press with a milling bit and free-handed cut the bedding area! Glass bedded the V Block.

I took the action and barrel out and used Dy-chem to see if the action fit O.K. in the V Block and it actually looked pretty good. But I skim bedded the action onto the V Block anyway. Then the gun started shooting much better. But, it still can't match my 6BRX. I did well enough to win second place in a club match in the F Bench group. I'm still not happy yet and will tune the gun for 180 gr Hybrids tomorrow ( only recently could I get any!). We will see.

To answer your question, I will not use a V Block again even tho I do not have clinical evidence it is the problem. Just that I have had good results with simple pillar and glass bedding. I would like to try a barrel block mounting scheme tho. That will take the action's ability to hold a fat 30" bull barrel out of the equation.

I just did a Whidden V-Block with a Rem 40X rimfire and the vertical at 100 yards has been excellent. I liked the possibility of putting a Rem 700 center fire clone in it later and switching them back and forth. So far, so good.
