Thoughts on a H&R Model 12

Hi,

I have the chance to purchase, at a great price, a H&R Model 12 Action with a Keith Smith reworked trigger, a Shilen 25" 1:16 twist barrel, tuner and a Weaver T36 in Kelbly Rings on Kelbly Bases, in a Benchrest Stock with a 3" Wide flat forend.

My thoughts are to shoot this locally at 50 yards, add a set of 25 MOA Kelbly Rings and bring it to Williamsport to shoot the 200 yard Rim Fire Matches. Not looking to be a national champion at my age, just have some fun.

Will this rig do well if I get the right ammo and I do decent shooting myself.

It has been a long time since I had any experience with H&R, though I enjoyed the H&R Rifles that I owned in the past.

Thanks , Bob

The M-12 shoots good. There's a guy listed on Rimfire Central under H&R that does a pretty good trigger job on them also (he did mine) if it's not quite to your liking. Current lot of Black Box Eley is shooting 10-shots @ .720 100yds so it's competitive.

I had an H&R Model 12 at one point, and it shot very well for me. Sounds like you have an opportunity to buy at a price you already seemed to be pleased with = go with your gut instinct.

I have many and prefer them to the better LOOKING Kimber . I've got equal numbers of each and the H&R is built better , has a better barrel and shoots better groups . But the stock needs a little weight loss .

I think mine is on par with my other better rimfire rifles. It's used regularly at the local long-range matches. I did swap out the stock for a new blank that is closer to my Supermatch.

Great underrated rimfire rifles. It's shoots good enough a couple of buddies that use Anschutz MPRs bought one for the matches. I'd like to find another one to have just to shoot the long-range matches with the peep sights, incredibly accurate. Before I took the peeps off this one clay pigeons at 200 yards were a piece of cake.

Here is a video on YouTube shooting it at a steel plate at 300 yards with the peep sights when it was in the original stock.

With the Shilen barrel it'll probably shoot better than the stock H&R barrel (assuming the Shilen barrel wasn't ruined by poor cleaning). If you can shoot it, then you'll know.
