Those of you using more than 47gr of Varget in .308 win

Do you use a drop tube to get it all in there? I am working up a load for my new FT/R rifle and the case is getting pretty full at 46gr. Im using Lapua brass BR-2 primers, 155 Palma SMKs seated 2.240in to the Ogive (2.907in OAL). Is there anything wrong with the powder level being up into the neck of the case?

Did you mean 46 and 47 grains? If not, I'd suggest you check your scale. 26 and 27 shouldn't put you at the case neck.

I'm using 45.50 grs. Varget under a Sierra 155gr. #2155 Old PALMA Bullet with WOLF primers and have room left over in the case.

Hodgdon Loading Date shows starting load of 44.0 and Max at 47.0gr. as a compressed load........

I think that may be 22 hornet brass.

Usually you can get to about 45 or 46 before you get up to the neck

Yes sorry, late night post. I meant 47/46 gr of varget. Edited to correct numbers.

Re: Those of you using more than 27gr of Varget in .308 win

I hate to beat on you as well, but something isn't right. I shoot 42 grs Varget @ 100yds (pushing 168 gr bullets) and still have plenty of room in Lapua, Norma, LC Match, Federal & RP casings to get up to probably 46 grs (never tried that high). Good luck in figuring out the mystery.

UPDATE: I see you changed your post to 47gr...now you are pretty much maxed and close too, if not, getting into a compressed load, depending on the bullet seat.

Yes as long as it doesn't push your bullet back out. After you seat some, check your COAL after a few hours and make sure it didn't push out.

A drop tube does wonders in this situation.
21st Century makes some nice ones.

The drop tube helps put gravity into play so to speak and allows for a better packing of the powder so it will fit.

Looking at a drop tube it doesn't really makes sense but they do work and the longer the better.

I have loads where I drop powder from a powder thrower into ppc cases, the drop tube is about 6" long, dropped slow I have plenty of room to seat the bullet. If I throw the powder in a pan and pour it into a case using a funnel, I can't get it all in the case.
