ThorroClean Bore Cleaning System

Seen it used at shamrock . Users talked highly of it . Did a great job they say.
Most used at the end of the day for a though cleaning . During the day during match most used wipe out . I know wipe out works well .

I took the plunge and ordered some today. I tried the Permatex foaming gasket remover that was mentioned a while back in this forum and it did loosen carbon much better than anything else I've tried. It may have gotten more of it if I had plugged the barrel and filled it letting it soak. I still have some traces in the first 2" of rifling and the rest is 99% clear. M-Pro-7, Wipe-Out, or Hoppes9 will not remove anything else.
Here are some pictures from my professional high-precision super-expensive bore scope. It cost all of $7 off Ebay. At least I can get an idea of what's in there but the image quality is extremely poor. The first 3 are close to the chamber but the rest of the barrel looks like the 4th picture.

I'll test the ThorroClean when I get it and see if it cuts this loose.

only thing I have seen that will clean a barrel is J&B or Isso I have done lots of tests with a hot barrel and found nothing gets out copper, but there could be a promise here today. I have a bunch of cleaners I just use them for carbon and to wet the barrel Hippies and JB Isso is all I use anymore. Maybe today is the day we hit paydirt with a new cleaner, I'm keeping my fingers crossed and my lucky pig ear

I've tried M-Pro7 and Wipe-Out / Patch-Out. The Wipe-Out did remove all the copper after using it several times setting 30 minutes in between treatments. It turns blue in the presence of copper. As I understand it, sometimes there are composite layers of copper and carbon making it much more difficult to remove. This is a Savage .308 barrel before and after. It stripped the copper well enough to see the machining marks. Something else that I think helps is to leave a light coating of oil in the bore after cleaning. (An oily patch followed by a clean patch) This should help make a little carbon before the bore has much of a chance to start coppering.

Received the ThorroClean yesterday and got to try it this evening. I can't say how it did right now. I need to have light through a window to help illuminate the bore with my cheap bore camera for a good comparison. I'll try to get some pictures tomorrow. I will say after cleaning the barrel several times with other products, it seemed spotless, and no more would come out on the patches. Tonight the first patches came out black so it got something. This was with one cleaning as per the instructions. I tried out the product on a clean piece or steel to see if it was coloring/corroding it and it did not. This is an email I received from the company.

There’s no need to let it sit in the bore before flushing. That’s one of the advantages of ThorroClean! If you do let it sit in the barrel for some reason, there’s no worry about it damaging the barrel.

I need a better bore camera! Anyway, I cleaned the bore a second time with ThorroClean and got more black out of it. I tried the cleaner on bare steel and an aluminum cleaning rod to see if it's where some of the black deposits were coming from. It had no effect on either. I cleaned the muzzle brake before the barrel this time incase the patches were picking up more grime from there. The top row is after using the gasket cleaner, Wipe-Out, M-Pro7 and finishing with Hoppes 9 until the patches came out clean. The bottom row is after 2 cleanings of ThorroClean.

After the 1st cleaning with ThorroClean, I repeated the process and these are the first patches after the second cleaning. They looked almost as bad as the first time. It evidently took out more carbon. It looks as if most of the deposits are withing the first couple inches of rifling where the bore gets the hottest. Hopefully, someone else tries this and posts the results. Looking at the bore with my eyes, it looks very shiny with sharp rifling.

I just ordered some. I have a Lyman borescope so I'll be able to post some before and after pictures.
Good. I'd like to see what it looks like with a good bore scope. To see if this stuff works, clean the bore the way you always do and then see if this gets more carbon out.

Has anyone used Bruce Hogdon's formula for carbon removal. I once read that he stated the best thing for carbon removal was Hoppe's #9 mixed with Bon Ami cleanser. He would mix this to a soft toothpaste like solution He stated to make sure and use only Bon Ami as other cleansers would scratch the bore.He would then wrap a tight fitting patch on his cleaning rod with the paste on it and start the stroking process through the bore.

Probably why he specified Bon Ami. I cannot get my hands on Bon Ami where I live or I would have tried this long ago.

use a carbon remover to remove carbon..what a silly idea.
gm tec( top engine cleaner) was one of the best, i still have some.
subaru makes some that works
mercury outboards have a cleaner that works and still available.( seafoam ?)

Its easy to clean the lands, its the grooves that present the challenge. Used all sorts of solvents, and Iosso on a nylon brush without success. Spray carb cleaner and many strokes with the brass brush worked best for me to get the grooves clean.

I tried to take a picture of the bore from the chamber end after cleaning. I had to refocus 3 times and made a composite of all 3 shots in #4. It still doesn't show enough to tell the condition of the bore.
