This seasons deer stories and what caliber etc. no arguing JUST FOR FUN

It was a great deer season for me this year. I took 11 deer that will feed my family and 4 other families this year. I took a 7 point buck and three doe with my Contender pistol 14" 30-30AI shooting 125 Nos. BT pushed with 33 grs IMR 4198 to 2670 fps. I took one 6 point buck with my custom Rem 700 27 3/4" Shilen barrel 264 Win mag with a 130 Nos Accubond pushed by 66.5 grs Retumbo to 3350 fps. I took one 3 point messed up gene big body buck with my custom Rem 700 Heart 21 1/2" barrel 308 Win with a 125 Nos Ballistic Tip pushed by 46 grs IMR 4895 3000 fps. I took a nice 8 point, two 6 point, one 4 point buck and a doe with my custom Rem 700 26" Shilen barrel 25-06 shooting Sierra 117 pro hunters pushed by 49 grs IMR 4350, 3050 fps. All were one shot kills.

2506,wow what a year! Here in new york we cant shoot but 3 animals per year plus bowhunting that would make 5. Congratulations to everyone.Bucks or does ,they are all trophys to me.

This year my favorite hunt was with my new bow. I got a Diamond Black Ice, and I am pretty pleased with it. I only have a 26.5" draw, so 225 fps is about what it shoots. I shoot a 100 grain fixed broad head on an Easton carbon arrow.
I was sitting in my blind one afternoon, when two does came in from directly in front of me. They wandered just to my left, and then started heading my way. As they were getting closer, one of them winded me, but never really could find me. She knew something was not right, but just couldn't figure out what it was. As she came in, seemed like every time I went to get the bow into position, one of the two does would be looking right at me. They kept coming closer and closer and still I had the bow lying on my lap. By this time my heart was just pounding. One doe finally got right in front of me at 6 yards, and decided that was where she wanted to start grazing. It took me nearly 5 minutes to get my bow into position, and I knew she could hear my heart about to explode. It was beating so hard I just knew she could hear it. She finally turned and looked away, and that gave me enough time to draw. Needless to say, she never had a chance. Being a long time gun hunter in Texas, I enjoy bow hunting now as it gives a whole new meaning to buck fever when you can get this close to your game.

and my all time favorite is right here.

We went out the second day of season and got there at 9:15am(alarm did not go off). Anyways I got taken by 4 wheeler to my spot and the guy drove away.I just got comfortable and heard noise to the east, about 30 minutes later out walked 2 young does. They milled for a short time ,then a 4 pointer walks out.A few minutes later 2 adult does walk out and stare at the 2 young does and all at once they start head butting the 2 young ones. They(adults) drove off the 2 young does and the buck.My heart sank.A few minutes later out walks a good sized deer with a smallish rack and he stops at about 90 yards from me.He is moving to the does and I shot him once and he dropped with my benelli super 90 in 12 gauge, smoothbore. Now the does are just walking around trying to figure out what happened to there boyfriend. They mill around for 3 or 4 minutes and all at once start moving my way.The does were different color, one is grayish and the other is reddish brown. The red deer mounts the gray doe on her back and drives her off right by my stand about 25 feet away. The red one starts coming and it paused and I shot with an instant kill shot. I have actually deer hunted for 33 years and never saw what I saw and never shot one of either sex in my life other than button bucks and does together at the same time. This was a huge day for me and will cherish it for the rest of my life.God blessed me that day.

congrats jon,
I had to laugh about the alarm thing and after 9:00 am ::) You know I here and see peoplke all the time headed out to there favorite spot with flashlight ??? I will never understand that mentality, I like to leave the house @ shooting light that way I don;t drive right by a nice one in the dark on the way to the FAVORITE spot;) The early bird doesn't allways get the worm in the hunting world as you just found out. I wish I could have been there to share it with you, sounds like you had quite a day. Oh and by the way God blesses all of us everyday if we would just open our eyes and see it ;D
Job well done jon and a great topic you have started I wish they were all this clean and fun, hope it doesn't stop for a while as I have enjoyed everybody's stories.
Wayne.

Actually what really happened is we stayed at my parents cottage and I turned the heater on in my bedroom and that is what tripped the breaker and caused such a memorable day.

Opening day in SW PA and saw nothing, well not entirely true we saw some small baldies. First Sat and my son and I got into the stand at 6:30. At 8AM a small 6 was walking right to us and at 30 yards my son's 308 sent him to the packer. Good shot - 150gr Barnes TTSX performed perfectly and the deer fell in it's tracks. Back tracked his trail and he was beded down not 80 yards from our stand - we must have been quiet enough moving in that we didn't spook him. Normally I would not have let my son shoot a young buck but this was effectively his last day.

Looking at the number of song dog tracks in the snow I will be spending the rest of my hunting in camo with a .223.

sounds like a great season thus far, i've ben hunting fer 20 plus years and this by far has ben one of the best i've had! my 16 and 14 year old daughters got there 1st big game licence this year. i took my 14 year old out and we saw a nice doe bout a 150yds so i took the 1st shot and put her down with a shot behind the head in the neck, then a even bigger doe came down to see what happend to the 1st doe, and i gave the gun to my daughter and she hit that one the same has dad did! what a day! i will never forget the look on her face! we used a 22br with 50gr v max with h 4895 doen the pushen. now if i can get the 16 year old out and off the phone long enuff to get one ;D happy holidays to all!

It has been a good season for my son and I here in Pa. My son shot a nice 8 pointer on the opener and I managed to get a decent 9 pointer while still hunting in the pouring down rain, two days later. I was shooting a 6.5X47 Lapua and my son was shooting my old trusty 7MM-08. There are pics of the deer on this forum under the the Topic 6.5X47 L and 7MM-08 both good deer rifles. http://www.accurateshooter.com/forum/index.php/topic,3755605.msg35899760.html#msg35899760

While I haven't hunted as much this year as I have in the past, I still managed a 160lb 7 point buck in NH the week after Thanksgiving. I took him at about 40yds with my .500S&W Handi Rifle, it was a quartering to shot with his left front shoulder being closest. I put a 300gr FTX through his left shoulder and it carried through his vitals to the back of the rib cage. He never even tried to move, though the impact rocked his world a bit, nearly flipping him over sideways. ;D

I did take a doe in Maine as well, but used my Remington 750 in .35 Whelen to make the shot at 120yds across a gravel pit. It was a clean shot though both lungs as she was standing broadside waiting for two other does to catch up. (how often do they just stand perfectly still broadside ??? ) I was actually coming out of the woods at around 2pm as I had to be at the doctors by 3:30, and there they were coming across the edge of the gravel pit, and the one in front stopped to look back. She won't do that again! I missed my dr's appointment, but it was worth it for sure!

I never got a shot at a buck in Maine this year, though I did see a few. They were all nice looking deer, but could never get a clean shot off. Oh well, maybe next year!

It was still a good year, with two animals taken. And even though they weren't real trophies or anything, they are still nice deer and have filled my freezer. Maybe others feel differently, but I get the same enjoyment from just taking an animal as I taking a trophy. Well the trophy might be a bit better, but they are all still a lot of fun.

Kenny they are all trophys period.I went some 4 years in the beginning of my hunting career to get my first deer.It was a huge new york doe that went 180#'s and she tasted good.

I have already given a short account of the 11 deer I took this year but I have to relate this story. I was hunting on a logging road between two cut over wood lots. The road is only wide enough for a pick-up truck. I have a box 4'X4' type stand with a roof on it that the floor is only 8' off the ground sitting on the edge of the road. I can see 125 yards down one direction and 170 yards down the other direction. There is a major deer crossing 80 yards away on the 125 yard side and one at 111 yards on the 170 yards side. I set up my Contender pistol in 30-30AI on sand bags pointing up the road on the 125 yards side and set up my rifle pointing down the road on the 170 yards side. It was late one evening, about 20 minutes before dark. This big doe just pops out of the cut over 45 yards from the stand on the Contender pistol side. I need some more meat so I place the cross hairs on her front shoulder and send a 125 gr Nosler ballistic tip from the 30-30AI 14" barrel at 2670 fps on it's way. It strikes the center of her front shoulder and she drops in her tracks. I reload the pistol because you can kill more than one deer a day. After about 10 more minutes the light is getting too low to see the cross hairs well on the pistol and it will only be about 10 more minutes before the light is too low to see through the rifle scope so I decide to get out of the stand and stretch my legs and wait for my hunting buddy to bring the truck to load up my doe. I unload the pistol and place it in it's holster and lay it by the door of the stand and reach around to my left to get my field glasses off the hook where I hang them and turn to place them by the door on the floor. At that moment I catch a flick of something at the edge of the wood line right in front of where the doe is laying in the road. I zero in on the spot and I see it again. It is the nose of a deer. I carefully reach around and get my rifle and try to keep one eye on the wide 6 point buck deer that steps out into the road and the other eye on my rifle so I don't bump anything as I pull it back off the shooting rail and get it turned around. The buck eases by the doe smelling of her and walks around behind her and has his nose right against her back side when I send a 117 gr Sierra Pro Hunter at 3050 fps from my Rem. 700 26" Shilen barrel 25-06 Rem. on it's way. It strikes him where his neck meets his shoulders and he drops in his tracks with his nose not 3" from her back side. I leave them laying that way so my buddy can see them. When he gets there he says "that poor buck, he probably thought that stuff killed him". I almost bust a gut laughing.

2506,
I envy you guy's that can get 11 deer, were only 1 three point or better per year ??? The Washington fish and wildlife were really thinking on that one! You can only imagine we have lots and lots of spike and two pointers running around but three and above are getting harder to find. I watched Ted Neugant shoot a couple of deer the other day on his TV program just about like your story, one with his 10mm 1911 and one w/his .270 win. It must be nice, I need to move back east I guess ;)
