This gun has got me curious

Hey guys, I really don't shoot rimfire much, but I Found this old marlin 80 E at a pawn
shop. It was in such good shape I bought it. Somebody had drilled it for scope so I threw a fixed target scope on it. What can you guys tell me about it.. year? The clip is metal with plastic follower inside.. Didn't know they were using plastic back then. Gun is really accurate even with the 100 pound trigger on it. I was shooting Super extra high vel Aguliura ammo last weekend , and getting inside a inch easy at 50 yards.. thanks. need history lesson

Question for you pro rimfire guys. Is a 24 inch barrel to long for
match grade ammo?? because its not as fast as varmint HV stuff?? I have noticed some match rifles have like 16 inch, barrels. Does a 24 inch barrel inhibit speed in match ammo???

No, it's not too long. My Winchester 52 target model has a 28 inch barrel and is used exclusively with SV match ammo. My Winchester model 68, recently passed to a friend for his children's use, has a 27 inch barrel and does fine with either SV or HV ammo.

Have no idea where you see 16" match barrels but probably 90% + of custom built benchrest rifles use barrels between 24"-26" with some going 27".

Cool. thanks guys for the info.. I think I will hold onto it. its a neat old gun. will have to do a trigger job though. I assume SV means slow velocity . shows you how much I know about rimfire...What is a low cost match ammo I could try in it?? for kicks..

The short 16" barrels came from the 3 position shooters less time in the barrel to effect the shot
My daughter was an Olympic shooter with gold in 2012 in women's 3P
She is now the US eley marketing executive
She shot all short barrels with a bloop tube to extend the sight radius
i don't see the need to shoot a short barrel in the BR game
However one of the local gunsmiths took a 28" barrel and fitted it to a rifle and started testing at 50 M
he cut the barrel down by 1" increments and did not see any loss in accuracy all the way back to the 16" length
It was re crowned each time and retested with a generous amount of different lots to get the results

I picked up an antique Remington Targetmaster 510 bolt action single shot with the chrome 26" barrel for a song. All it needed was the rear sight leaf elevator. Numrich had it for less than $8.

It's still a fun shooter.
