Thinking about shooting f t/r..help with scope please

I shot my first year and a half with a Leupold VX3 6.5-25X50 I picked up for $600. It worked great. Last year I moved up to a NF 12-42X56BR. The Leupold now resides on my 6.5 Grendel Field Precision Rifle. I shoot both at 600 yards. In short, what you have will do just fine until you 1) decide if you like this game or 2) save up funds to upgrade later.

Vmax, These guys would never laugh at a fellow competitor, especially a underdog. You GOTTA go and try it.
U will never have so much fun on your belly......................WELL!? Thanks, John

If your looking for a good scope for a good price I would go with a weaver target scope. I have a 36X fixed scope and i am really impressed with it. You really cant go wrong with it.

... For me I like to be able to determine all the rings on the target, and see them clearly. The NF 8x32x56 does this as well the 12x42x56. (1000yd) At certain times of the day Sightron could just not do this for me....
Why do you have problems seeing the rings with Sightron sometimes and not with the Nightforce? Does the Nightforce have better glass?

I absolutely love my SIII 6-24X50 LR D scope, those that have looked through it have been impressed, I feel for the money you can't beat them. I may be misinformed, but it is my understanding that the glass for the SIII's and the Nightforce are ground in the same plant.

The Benchrest 12x42x56 is hard to beat in my books!

Folks in cold climates need to know that the NF 12-42 BR only has 40 minutes of elevation. Unless you are shooting 155's at the higher velocities, you may not get the elevation you need unless you go with a 30 minute rail which will probably not get you a 100 yard zero. Of course, you can hold off the target rings, but more than 1 minute of hold off is too much in my experience.

I have a NF NXS 12-42 and it has 45 minutes of elevation. With a 100 yard zero on a 20 minute rail, I have 40 up and 5 down.

At this point Yes!!

Save yourself time and wondering get a March scope. There is nothing else out there that will compair

I have a March 10-60 Tactical on my main F T/R rifle and it's the best scope I've ever used. For target shooting it is great. For true tactical shooting, nothing beats a Nightforce or S&B.

Unfortunately, that's not an issue here in Louisiana. :)
But I do shoot the 155.5 FB's, so I only need 12 moa up from my 100 zero.

RStewart - Certainly you must be talking 600 yards and not 1000? In 80+ degrees, a 3000 fps 155 will need an elevation adjustment in the mid to upper 20 minute range with a 100 yard zero. In colder weather, more.

All optics do their best work in the middle of their range, the edges are no place to be. For most 40 min scopes a 20 min base is best choice to put you in the middle of its range where the edges have distortion problems. You can still zero at 100 and do load testing and such, and use the best of the scope where you need it.

Charlie-
You are correct. I shoot 600 yards.

Got you message eric, everything falls in place when it's time for it. The most in shooting is wind reading, and experience is the best teacher and that comes from within you. A winner overcomes the emotions of the moment and let's the hard work do its job.. Work hard!!!

This site is so helpful, most forums people really bash each other and it gets old and I usually loose intrest. I really appreciate all the comments/help! Its kind of funny now that I think about it, all I ever wanted was a nice Leupold for years, and I finnally got 2! And now I want a Nightforce, lol. So Im just gonna stick with the Leupys for the next few years and see how it goes. Plus when my boy gets old enough I'm sure he'll love them haha

While I have just yesterday taken the plunge and bought my 2nd march 10-60x scope for my new F/TR rifle, the Sightron 10-50x is one of the best buys out there. I have one on my spare F Open rifle and cannot fault it. It is lighter than the NF 12-42, the optics are as good (some say better, some say not), has lower low end and higher high end magnification, tracks well and is lighter, a bit cheaper as well. Any other Sightron 10-50x users out there?

I just recently mounted a Sightron 10-50x60 LRMD on my 6.5 Creedmoor that I bought/built for f-class and long range matches. Before that my only experience has been with Leupolds (6.5-20 and 24 target versions). Set to 25x the Sightron is easily as clear as all my Leupold scopes. Now, I currently reside in Georgia and we can have some serious mirage down here so once I start pushing 30x I am having to deal with a pretty nasty sight picture and it is tough for me to judge clarity. Last weekend at an f-class match I was able to look through a NightForce for comparison and I have to say that from my personal perspective they were quite equal.
