Thinking about shooting f t/r..help with scope please

Im back and forth at the moment. I have a Leupold 6.5-20 VX3 LRT now, but I feel as though I might need a little more magnification because on a couple events I have no friends who shoot or who could spot for me. SO I'm considering maybe the Sightron 10-50x60. The price is attractive as well. Any thoughts or opinions?

Also, heres my last target with my varget/75 amax load. This was 5 shots at 100. I pulled on the last shot :-\ and for some reason the pic loaded sideways haha and apparently I wrote the wrong date on it...Jeez Im fallin apart lol

I can't say anything bad about Leupold, Sightron, or NF! I even considered a Sightron over the NF for FTR. For the Money Sightron is a great option if your budget want allow a NF. However all in all I had to stick with NF. For me I like to be able to determine all the rings on the target, and see them clearly. The NF 8x32x56 does this as well the 12x42x56. (1000yd) At certain times of the day Sightron could just not do this for me. I will add that I'm a little anal about this so that probably influences my opinion a little. I don't need the power as much as I just need to see clearly and be sure of my hold.

No get the best you can afford the higher power is there when you need it, I turn mine down alot but up when air is clean. A scope seems like a secondary but it's the best money you will spend. You won't regret a good scope.

I would trust a 20x NF over the 20x Leupold. I'm far from a top shooter, but If You can get high Magnifaction in time for your match then yes do that! I've shot my NXS and BR models at 25x when Mirage was that bad. For me as long as I can see the rings clearly then I only drop points due to the nut behind the butt or missing wind calls. Bottom line power doesn't matter as much as what my eye's can see! Magnigaction helps but not at all if you can't see anything. Like (Match director Mike) said buy the best you can afford! Cry only once!!

Hmm all very good valid points. I guess I could sell my Leupold for the Nightforce. I wish I could use one first though haha. Thanks guys!

vmaxpro - I don't disagree with anything said here...but I use an NXS 5.5-22x56 out to 1000 yards and have no issue discerning rings (I have won long and short yardages outright using the NXS). Possibly I don't shoot in the same level of mirage as you guys, but I expect that most dial it down to cope anyways.

The one thing I would say is if you have a scope or any gear for that matter, just start using it. The reason being until you start using gear (scopes - whatever) in anger, you won't learn what you like or dislike and invariably people change their choices once the learning has begun (reticule choice is a good candidate for change)...at some point the gear will hold you back but you will be a long way down the track in understanding what works or not for you.

If you have nothing then hey - make the best choice you can. Normally weight is a factor in FTR and nightforce are heavy...having said that I am going to compromise on barrel specs to make my NXS work.

Good luck

Don't get in hurry, a scope doesn't make you shoot better it only allows for better vision, of the target. It is the best money spent because you can't wear one out. But all things being considered you will be competing against the better scopes.

Don't be afraid to use that Leupold!!! Go shoot your first match and enjoy it! I shot my very first match at 1000yd with a Leupold! I was hooked!! NF and lots of other great high dollar equipment may make things a bit easier, But one does not need top equipment to enjoy a great sport! Or even be successful! A friend of mine shot a 200 15X at 500yd with Win Brass 175 smk and wolf primers. (A National Record) In the end all the great equipment doesn't define a shooter at the end of the day! Shoot what you have and enjoy yourself. Good optics's are great but far from what is needed to shoot well!

Exactly my point. 6BRinNZ just explained it better than I!! ;)

Haha ok Im gonna use what I got, I just didnt wanna get laughed outta there! I also have a 8.5 -25lrt on my 300wsm, maybe Ill just switch them over since I barely shoot it!

20 to 25 is plenty at midrange provided you can find an appropriate technique for handling wind changes. The LR target is actually easier to see than the MR63FC (300 yard) target.

I have a 6.5-20 on my F T/R rifle, and I have a really hard time seeing the rings well enough to hold off (especially at 300). That doesn't change my ability to place in most matches I shoot in. I have repeatedly tried a hold-off method with absolutely no success. I have to click the knobs with that little power and hold center. It adds a level of difficulty, but I can't afford a Nightforce yet. When I can, I might just see my scores improve.

Either way, what you got will work just fine, and can win the match if you do your part.

Best of luck!

Sir
highly reecommend you take what you have and start shooting F-class. I started with a simple Super Sniper (20X) and it was fine to start. You will learn what works - also while at the match you can ask folks about gear and liklely even look through and shoot with some. BTW you will see EVERYTHING imaginable out there - not all of us have the big bucks to buy high end gear

Finally ended up wth Sightron - for the money they are very very good.

Like Nike says - "just do it"

Just what everyone else said. Take what you have, go out and shoot a match. WARNING!!! After that first match you will be hooked, and the money will start flowing out of your bank account faster than you can put it in. LOL

I would recomend the higher magnification scope when you get a new one. I have all three scopes listed. I would say that nightfoce is the Top out of the three. I love the Leupold but they just don't make a varible zoom scope with enough magnification. I just ordered my third nightforce.

Thank you guys for the great info!! Im pretty excited to try, I dont care if Im dead last Ill have so much fun watchin everybody else haha. I have no friends that shoot so I look forward to talkin with the pros!!

Shoot what you have. Right now it is more important that you work on your basic marksmanship skills and wind/mirage reading. There will be plenty of time later to upgrade your equipment.

Spend some time talking with folks at the matches. Most will be very helpful and will show you the ropes. They will also discuss equipment and let you look through their glass.

Have fun.

You can do mid-range just fine w/ a 20x. You may decide all sorts of things once you start to compete. The best thing, like said by many, go compete. The higher magnification will help you hold better and that will help you win more. If you start with that scope you will never know how good you have it. Plus, with all money pit type hobbies, your first purchases are often regretted. You will know better how to blow your cash when you know what you are doing with it. Nobody's gonna laugh at your scope.
