Thinking about building a range.

This gentleman, Mickey Coleman (Coleman Rifles) could probably give you some help. He has/had a private range in AL for 20yrs. I have shot at some others, one was in Porcupine, SD, way out in the middle of nowhere, and the reservation. Probably many others, but some hold matches, as above, to others just for friends, not advertised. My first inclination would be Why? There is got to be a better way to find a shooting range. Too much govt red tape and liability issues, ImO. Ron

I am a member of Frontier and have been for a lot of years. I want a range that will support more then cmp shoots. And at their 1k range they aren't gonna have any benches.

Would you own the mineral, coal, and oil & gas rights as well? If not, what are the rules regarding how the owners of such rights could exploit them and prevent you from using this land?

Someone mentioned politics, never underestimate it. I know of two private ranges in Northern Nevada, the range owned by the politically connected guy is 2 miles from a town and is not annexed (subject to county rules, not the town's). Another range 9 miles out of this same town IS annexed by the town and is subject to town rules that are more restricted. Both would be served in an emergency by the same COUNTY fire crew that has a contract with the town to provide services.

Just my two cents worth from an older guy. Chase your dream whatever that may be.
Don't let the nay sayers deter you. Good luck.

Nick,
What happened in Pueblo? No more IBS 600 yard matches? And I thought you were way older than 39. Maybe get more involved with the local club. GRRC gave us a $14,000 check to build our 600 yard line and we came in under budget. We just spent another $15,000 on pit area upgrades. If you show them you are serious about improving the range they might let you do what ever you want and also finance it. Our club has some political BS but are very open to improvements, if you have a crew that will donate all the labor of course. What ever you decide take the bull by the horns and run with it. Might be cheaper to relocate. Come to MN and you can have my position as match directer. Pm me your phone number

Hoier, I was just thinking, you know that cut on the back side of the saddle you can see on the south side of 24 when you come down the hill from Rampart Range? Where they strip mined? That would be a great location for a firing range, and the land is useless for anything else. It would be uber convenient, and you could orient it to the north, which is always best. A buddy and I were thinking of the same thing you are, and that's the spot we thought about.

If you need or desire help or even encouragement, call on me man. :)

If you have access to heavy equipment and know how to operate it. Buy the 640 acres build a range for your personal use and leave it at that. The 640 acres 30 years from now will be your retirement when you want to sell it. Thats what i've done on my property.

Thanks Stubbi

I do have access to heavy equipment. The problem with that idea is I don't have enough money. But it is a good idea. I would have to make it some sort of business to keep it.
