Thinking about a 35-33 Nosler, maybe a .358 UMT?

Hi Shooters,
Anyone build one? I've got a couple .35 Rems and a .35 Whelen already. Shot my first 15 deer or so with Grandma's 141 pump in .35 Rem so when some 300 grain A-Frames came up on this forum, I thought hmmmmm..... No reason other than something different.

What's everyone's experience?

How difficult is it to get or make the ammo. Deer don't know what caliber rifle a bullet came from. Is it easy to buy bullets in shooter supply stores?

I've always wanted to do a 358STA. Maybe an ultramag since STW brass is harder to get and I have a pile of RWS 404 brass I could make it from

I love a 33nosler. But if you like a 35rem or comparable this aint even in the same ballpark. Its what me and dad both use to hunt with. Recoil isnt bad at all compared to smaller magnums and components/dies are easy to get. You ought to see what it does to a swinging plate out there about 400yds

35-33 Nosler would be much like the old 35 Newton. The 358 Norma Mag case capacity is very close to a belted Newton. Brass can be made from 300 WinMag or, if you dont mind short brass, 338 WinMag. Data is sparse, new powder data is nowhere to be found, but neither is the 35-33. With a 22" barrel & PP2000MR I've gotten 3200fps with 200s, 3100+fps with 225s, & 3000fps with 250s. Not sure what you want to shoot with it, but that's some pretty big whoopass for about anything on this 1/2 of the planet. Those 300s are a whole 'nuther thing.

I've got lots of big rifles; .338Win Mag from a friend's estate, a .338 RUM, a couple .338 Lapua's including a fun 16" suppressed big bear thumper, a Whelen, .375 H&H and .375 Ultra, and a .458 Lott. This is just a toy to play with, maybe shoot a bear or elk. Not big enough for the fun stuff in South Africa, but it would no doubt do it with the A-Frames. Might consider a 35-338 Ultra too. Just a fun excercise and an excuse to play with a new cartridge.

The Ultra/404 sounds like a fun project. I wonder if 378 Wthrby brass might have a little more capacity? Maybe do it with a 35* improved shoulder if you dont like the double radius.

Yes it does, about 20 grains of capacity of H2O. Usually the .338 or the .378 Weatherby cases can vary between 134 to 137 grains of capacity depending on which method you choose to neck it down or improve.

As an apprentice, I built several of these for long range elk hunters. My mentor was a fanatic for anything .35 caliber. One of the names used at that time was the .350 Wells Express. Nice cartridge with lots of energy for poking holes in critters at longer distances. Be prepared, it can be a little pushy...

The original barrels used a 1:10" twist rate. Currently, I'm working on a .35-33XC case which is being set up for the 340 grain MTH bullet and could use a 1:9" twist for the folks who hunt on the lower flat lands. At 4 - 9,000 ft. the 1:10" is supposed to be fine according to the Berger calculator.

For fun, I went searching for the .358", 300 gr. A-Frames and couldn't find any anywhere. Were these discontinued?

What action would you use for the Wells?

We originally made the actions in the shop based on the Brevex Mauser actions, all custom. These are more rare than hen's teeth by a long shot. But the client could supply the Weatherby Mk5 magnum actions. Nowadays shooters use the Granite Mountain Arms or a Prechtl action.

Currently I use the Surgeon 1581XL or one of the big Bat actions. The JJ Rock works also but they aren't taking orders until they get caught up. Barnard makes a really nice Lapua action which works. Any action which will handle the Lapua or Weatherby (378) length and bolt face cartridges are fine.

Forgot to add the CZ550 Rigby actions.
