Thinking about a 30BR, some questions

Ive got a Savage F-class 6.5-284 thats shot out its barrel and im thinking of what I should rebarrel it to.

Ive thought of a 6x47 Lapua but, Im kinda getting tired of the 6mm for now. Ive got a 6mm Br also. And have thought of the 30BR, What would you guys say the max range is for that round? 300yd?

Ive read the section about the 30br and am thinking of it for a 100 to 300yd round.

What do you guys think?

I just got my 30br from the great Ronnie Long, but have not had the opportunity to shoot it yet. I was told 300 is max effective range for competition. I know it's dominating in those ranges.

BlackHawk95,
I have shot with some guys in 600 yds IBS benchrest, that shoot 30BR. and have shot many sub 2' groups and a 0.9' group last year. He shoots Breger 110 gr fb bullets. I had one for score shooting. It is a great round. I was think about one twisted to shoot a little heavier bullet say a 155gr palma bullet. It would be accurate as long as the bullet stays super sonic.

Look up match results for Peidmont Gun club on Ibs web site.

15 twist and BIB 136 gr should get you to 600 nicely. I have a 15 twist that also shoots BIB 118 into very small groups.

I shot some 150 SMK in my 1:16 twist 30BR. Great groups at 100 yds running 2600 fps. I don't see why this wouldn't perform at 300 yds. tiny

Thanks for the replys.

You know the more I think of it, Every time i move up in bullet size, ie. 6mm to 6.5 to 30cal, I seem to progressively shoot a little better. Is ther any truth to the smaller bullets being more finicy?

The more i think of it, I think the Savage will be the perfect donor rifle for this round.

What would the the ideal twist and bullet weight for 300yd to a max of 400yd?

Jerid

17 twist..That will handle anything up to 125 gr flat base bullets. You can easily get 3000fps out of 110's and 112's and 115's. with that twist and H-4198..Lot's of good bullets for the 30BR. If you use tungsten disulfide, danzak) or moly you can shoot all day and not clean, and your barrel will last 5000 rounds or more.
Have fun with it.

BlackHawk95... don't mean to jack your thread, but I have a question related to yours...

Would the 30br be a good groundhog round for ranges out to about 600 or 700 yards?,would it be ethical/produce clean kills?)

I'm in the beginning steps of a varmint gun build, and have been seriously considering the 30br. Everyone keeps telling me to go with the 6br, for multiple reasons. I really like how efficient and barrel-friendly the 30br is,not that the 6br is too bad, but I'm intrigued by the 30 cal round for some reason).

So, along with what Blackhawk was asking... why not the 30br for ranges beyond 300yds?

made mine with a .30 cal full bore barrel so i couild use heavier slugs at longer ranges

mine has done a .441 at 100 with 155 F-class projectiles so it is accurate enough
I hope to try it at 500 soon

I have a another question now....

what exactly is meant by 'full bore barrel?'

Wouldn't you simply have to get a faster twist .308 cal barrel to shoot heavier bullets?

full bore is a prone/positional target shooting discipline from the olympics etc- well it was a few years back

k.d range shooting with 308's and 223's and open sights out to 1000 yards and sometimes to 1200

there are various names for it- sorry i dont know the USA name for this type of shooting

twist rates are 1:12 through to 1:13.5 or there abouts
308's are shooting a controlled projectile of 155 grain

Thanks! I learned something new today!

BlackHawk95:
The 30BR is an incredible cartridge. It is also meant to be run within certain parameters for best performance. Deviating from this plan...asking the cartridge to do what it was never intended to do...will compromise the results.

If you want to run a 30' barrel, shoot heavy bullet, etc., you may be better served with a plain vanilla 308W.

Just my two cents worth. -Al

There's very little velocity difference bewteen 30BR barrels from 21' to 24'.

Barrel weight has a lot to do with gun balance and how it handles in the bags, though. My advice would be to use a barrel length that doesn't get the gun nose heavy. -Al
