thinking about a 22lr rifle - have around

I have had a Marlin 60 for close to 30 years. As well as a few others. But I realy like the Marlin great gun for the money.I shoot cci stingers when I want a little exta range and accuracy.

I have a Marlin 795. The factory stock is junk, so I replaced it with a wood stock from Numrich. It's a great little truck rifle. The action has to be kept clean and it requires HV ammo to cycle reliably.

I also have the CZ452 American. Scoped it with a Leupold rimfire scope. Nice, accurate rifle, But the Marlin is almost as accurate for a bunch less money.

I have some variation of the old Mossburg 44. These were great rilfes but have archaic scope mounting holes on the receiver. These are full sized rifles so a youngster might not fit.

I use the ruger American rimfire rifle, not the carbine. I have a redfield scope on top with the accurange reticle. I shoot silhouette chickens out to 200 yards. The rifle at this time is set up for 100 yards. I use cci standard velocity. The important thing with the ammo is that it is consistent. I have gotten into some batches of different ammo that will have a 24" vertical at 200 yards. Switch ammo and the vertical is very minimal.

I own many 22's. Mostly match rifles. For a nice quality plinking rifle I think the CZ 452, or 455 are the best bargain to be had. I have seen a couple of Savage's shoot very well for the price as well, but the quality, / fit and finish of the CZ far exceed all rifles in the same price category. You would need to spend north of $1,000 to have a rimfire that shoots as well, and better built. In my opinion.

I have a 504 HB for informal bench shooting and a CZ American 452 in .17 HM2. Once I tweaked the CZ trigger with a spring kit, it is all I could ask for in a walk-around small game rifle. FWIW the .17 HM2 kills GH's quicker than any .22 LR I ever shot and is quiet and less prone for ricochets.

As you try to decide, I have a new-unfired CZ 452 Full Stock in 22WMR that has been in my safe for a few years. I won't be using it. They don't show up for sale too often.

+1 on an older match or sporter rifle. Winchester, Remington, or Anschutz - something you will be proud to own for life and it will long outlast a Ruger, Marlin... Built when more Americans (and Germans) took pride in hand work. Figured wood with a deep finish. Tightly inlet stock. Hand checkering. Outstanding barrel. Deep rich bluing. Light crisp trigger. Just like money in the bank; maybe better.

The Rem 511 is a nice little bolt action that can be had for 200+- a few bucks, depending on condition. The later versions had a grooved receiver for a scope if one wanted. That whole 510 series are fine rifles. If you have a few more bucks to spend 541T, get the sporter or the heavy barrel. Fine shooters.

Funny how many people buy a 10/22 then throw away the barrel, stock, trigger group, bolt....

Swapped the barrel after 30 years isn't too bad. Still have the factory stock, still have original trigger group (polished and filed down a little for lighter break) and still have the factory bolt that I polished.

This is my wifes target at 25yards while standing. Trigger is 100% stock had not even been polished yet.

I love my CZ rimfires but if you can find one of their Brno ancestors dont hesitate and snag that sucker up,,they were way overbuilt to last 10 lifetimes and will drive nails as well,,

I wanted a 22 LR rifle a few years ago.. And I have bought several to give my kids over the years.. I ended up with a Winchester Wildcat. Yup It's made in Russia, by Tula I believe, but it is a tack driver.. Literally. With match ammo it is a 1 holer at 50 yds.. I bought the target model, but there is a plain Jane model as well.. I also have a Browning BR22 that I have had around for 40 years.. It is a tack driver as well, and I have never touched the sights.. I bought it for #1 son, but his wife doesn't like guns and he lives in the big city.

For cheap the Marlins are pretty good..

I would take a long look at the Ruger 10-22. A couple years ago I decided that I needed a 22lr for squirrel hunting. After looking at a dozen rifles I purchased a 10-22. THe nice thing about the 10-22 is that you can leave it the way it is and just shoot it or, you can spend 100's investing in aftermarket parts and accessaries. Mines accurate and does what its supposed to do. I've cleaned it once in the two years I've had it and had no problems with accuracy. Dollar for dollar it's a great investment.

I shoot a 795 Marlin for fun. Handy, cheap, lite & accurate for squirrel. I'm happy so far.

I've got the Ruger American Rimfire Target and like it OK. Nice to have the rotary magazine - same as 10-22. I have a 10-22 also that I've pretty much re-built with stock, barrel, bolt, and trigger group...so the only original Ruger part is the receiver. It's very accurate - more so than the Target model. If you like to tinker and build 10-22 is a good choice with a myriad of after market parts around. I've started shooting the NRL22 matches, well, I shot one match, and that looks to be something to continue with for me anyway.

If I had the budget for it I'd get a CZ 455 or wait for the CZ457.

Why wait for a 457.Theyre already out there.Im deciding between the 457 and T1x.

Well, I have had them all and here are my favorites, not necessarily in this order....Browning BLR, lots of fun to shoot especially with that short throw lever. Ruger 10-22, also lots of fun and not just to shoot, you can easily modify one without paying a gunsmith. Winchester 52 {and various options} I have had two and they were both "squirrel head" accurate. If you can scare up an old Winchester 74 {22 short auto} that works right you can have a lot of fun with that too.
I have a couple 94/22's that are very nice guns. Lots of fun with a Ruger Mark III if you are possibly considering a pistol.
