Thickness of Newer Lots Of Lapua 220 Russian Brass vs Older Lots.

One other thing.

For those that think a tuner is just window dressing, I fine tuned the rifle this morning with the tuner.

The first couple of groups had about .280 verticle. I knew this load combination would work, so I loaded 12 rounds and shot three shot groups, adjusting the tuner . At about 3/8 of a turn from start, (the tuner is on 36 threads per inch), it hit bingo. I then loaded the 30.4 grn load, just off the lands, and shot the three groups I posted. Then, just to see, I went to another 2 moth balls and with the appropriate hold, nailed 2 wipeouts.image.jpg

Can't and won't argue with results but I'd bet smaller tuner increments would've got you the same results. Don't know how far or long it took but most tuners and bbls have 2 sweet spots in a single revolution and they're easy to recognize if you don't skip right over them. Good job either way and it worked for ya. That's what matters and that's kinda how they score ya, too.

One complete turn is just .027 inch. The 3/8 equaled around .010 to .o11 advance. The tuner weights about 3.2 ounces.

Yep! Jackie, that doesn't change my mind at all and is exactly what I'd expect...basic math. Again, just yep. The very, very most common mistake made with any tuner is moving them too far at a time.
As long as what you're doing gives you good results AND that they are predictable. I wouldn't change what you're doing. But I'll explain it in great detail if you want to give me a call sometime.

edit to add...I'll walk you through a detailed test that will show you what I tell you. It's about 45-50 rounds. I'm positive you'll gain something from this test. Everyone does.

Jackie...glad you decided to fire those cases. When we were working with our .085 neck length WolfPup, we found that firing the cases the first time 'ironed out' the necks, regardless of what the micrometer said. That first firing also squares the neck to the case body in a way we never can using tooling.

There's nothing like whappin' a brass case with 65,000 + psi to align stuff.

Nicely done. :) -Al

Agree Al, not that concentricity is paid much attention to anymore, I found after prepping new brass even after neck turning it is useless to roll the cases on any type of concentricity gauge if one is looking for low numbers. But, once the cases are fired and sized normally the numbers will look pretty good from the chamber.
