I moved to PA about five years ago. There are very few groundhogs, or so I thought. I am convinced they have been shadowing this site and knew my fierce reputation...so fierce that the term "getting snerted" became a thing. Trembling in fear, the local groundhogs met and adapted...

They have gone nocturnal! My wife took this from inside our Honda, at 10 PM about two weeks ago. I saw this digger standing on the gravel shoulder with a full apple in his mouth, standing there like a hobo hitching a ride! I swung around and she got a quick photo.

I thought I saw one on a nearby road last year at night...but thought my eyes were fooling me. Proof...they ARE hiding from me!

To do it right you will need a Thermal scanner and a night vision scope. The scanner will let you know if something is out and the Night Vision will let you ID it. A cheap Scanner (not very good) will run 500-1500 dollars, a better unit 2500 and up. AS for the scope, $500 for a unit that will get the job done. So it all comes down to how much do you hate groundhogs.
I have seen what may have been a groundhog at nite when using my thermal but couldn't tell if it was a groundhog or something else. I was calling coyotes at the time so didn't really care. Good luck.

In the southern states, the best nocturnal varmint shooting involves armadillos. Man those suckers JUMP when hit. Big fun!

Last year I was driving home on a busier road and saw one standing there on the shoulder, just like this one was. Almost like he was hitchin a ride. I shook my head like i was seeing things and drove on. I was sure I saw it, but at the same time doubting my brain. When this guy showed up and my bride was with me I yanked a u turn and went back for a second pass, and it took forever for her to get a photo! He was standing just before she finally got this photo as he wandered up into the....graveyard....

Hmmm...maybe you are on to something.

I have heard people say that the females around birthing time we go nocturnal for a few days. I have shot several out of persimmon trees while squirrel hunting.
