I was visiting a friend here in Montana yesterday afternoon and this guy, and about 199 of his buddies, decided to pay us a visit. This one is a perfect example of the importance of bullet placement being more important than the size of the case and bullet. I drilled him just behind the front shoulder with a 69 grain Lapua Scenar out of a .22 Creedmoor. He did exactly the same thing the last 5 or 6 have done that were shot with a 7mm Rem. He stood there for a few seconds, and then started doing that Michael Jackson moon walk rubber leg thing, and down he went. That bullet absolutely wrecked both lungs at 360 yards. He'll look good all wrapped up in white paper.

At least his final resting place is a Toyota, instead of a Ford,Chevy,Ram,etc.

Sometimes the only shot we get on a bull is not ideal. This raghorn was jumped out of his bed at about 25 yards. What I saw as I pivoted to my right was his rack laying down on his back, and his orange rump patch just about to disappear into thick timber. A snap shot with my .338-06 Ackley (with 210gr Partitions) on his poop chute was about all the sight picture I could get prior to him disappearing into the thick stuff.

The shot broke the large hip joint, traversed all the way through and broke his off shoulder. He piled up as shown on a deadfall. We all don't get those perfect shots on elk, and must take what we're given.



Moral: Use enough gun for the task at hand, as shots most likely will not be ideal.

Headed to town and just down the road were 4 guys working for the County, standing next to a pick up looking at an Elk Cow that got hit by a car earlier in the morning. Bet they're STILL trying to figure out how to get that thing in the back of the truck.

That's properly cold. The news go nuts here if it hits -5°C let alone -38°C! We mostly get wet and grey weather these days. One day I'll make it to Montana/Wyoming, maybe not in the depths of winter though!

Sometimes, I think I am nuts for wanting to move back to Wyoming, but the over-the-counter big game tags are so inviting. I live alone, and Wyoming is the perfect state for being left alone! I lived in Wyoming 16 years before, and I think I could give it another shot.
