Theft Risk at Storage Centers

Went to my rental storage unit today. It was open and about 60k$ in shooting and reloading equipment of mine was stolen.
Lots of brass, primers, powder, bullets, gunsmiths tools, optics, a shit load of Irreplaceable gun parts, magazines still in the packaging, shooting gloves, slings you name it

35 years collection gone.

If you have anything valuable, anything you cherish. Dont let it out of your reach.

Let me find these MF's , ill let the dogs take em apart.
The only part of this that has sunken in. Is anything i want to do with my rifles..were in those boxes...no guns were stollen i didnt let those out of my sight.. douchebag world

I feel if people were held accountable for their actions there would be less crime. I dont me slap on wrist, actual punishment. Even kids. Many times growing up i knew i was getting it when i got home. My dad put the fear of god in me when needed. Never did i do bad stuff, but was a butt head sometimes. I wish you luck in trying to get ur stuff back.

My storage unit got hit about 6 years ago. I estimated my loss around $40K. Custom bikes, all my fishing, archery, airgun, even my big rollaway tool box. They also smashed the windows of my 66 beetle and used a screwdriver to pry open the glove box, hood, deck lid and radio plate, which all of them were just push button to open and not locked.

I feel for you.

I was in the hospital for 10 days once. Told the guy working for me to take my guns from the trailer I lived in to his house. When I got out I didn't go pick them up, I would just ask him to bring what I wanted to work. He came in one day and somebody broke into his house and stole his guns, my guns, and even the window AC units in his house. To make a long story short, he sleuthed around a little bit and someone who had seen one of the guns informed him of who had it. He went into a pool hall where the guy was and shot some pool with him, then asked him outside to show him something. The thing was a 22lr pistol shoved up his nose and my friend's backup pointing a large revolver at him. We didn't get all the guns back, but I got the ones I really wanted, the guy went to jail and we got a couple of $K in restitution.

Oh man that really sucks. The only way this shit is going to change is when these laws that protect the scum of the world go away and let honest folks take action when appropriate without the risk of going to jail.

I dont see that happening anytime soon. Violence and Community justice when needed would fix a lot of things wrong in this country.

Im still angry to post anything . It will be unproductive, and foul. Then ill get kicked off the forum, and have even more tragic loss.
The cameras had the wires dangling, and spray paint on them.
Police were kind, and absolutely useless.

Im stupid, i knew i never should have left those things out of my sight. But i really didnt have much of a choice.

What gets me upset is the majority things stolen will end up in some dumb treakers burn barrel , because the moron doesnt even know what he stole..
I have to go now.
The anger is making me shake .

OMG!...holy crap!..

So sorry to hear this. It's not just storage facilities, and not just someone you didn't know watching the place. My wife's parents house was robbed while they were on vacation. Turned out to be the hairdresser, a long time family friend. And neighbors didn't call the police because it was someone they had seen before several times. Hey got a few things of value, but left the really good stuff laying all over the place because it looked fake - apparently Russian gold is too yellow?

Sorry for the OP losing all that. No guns involved but a full household of stuff that belonged to my maternal grandmother was stolen from a storage unit (in Alabama) that I rented and put ALL her belongings in when I had to put her in a nursing home. One piece of antique family heirloom furniture and all her cast iron cookware were the most treasured by me. The storage place didn't have cameras but it took a good sized box truck to haul all her stuff. I hate thieves and believe that at minimum they should have their thumbs cut off, if not their entire hand(s).

I WOU,D NOT STORE THAY STUFF IN AT A PUBLIC STORAGE. Tommy Mc Sorry for your loss.

Had a storage unit broken into once.
They came in through the adjoining units wall.
Was very lucky, they got only a few things that were not too valuable.
The only thing they got I was upset about was a very large ammo box and about 20 lbs of powder .

This is just horrible.

I hate a thief. The Bible tells us that we're not supposed to hate anyone. But it's hard not to hate a thief. A thief is almost on the same level as a child molester.

I know all the emotions your feeling , been ripped off to the tune of 400k my life savings. One minute your angry the next depressed . The only thing I can pass on that might help is the thought if God can forgive these people then He can forgive me !!

The current state of the world going to hell, literally. Scammers, thieves, muggers, and people who have no work ethic or moral center. It's sickening. I was raised in the 50's and we had beautiful, wooded gun cabinets to keep our rifles. No one in my family or neighborhood even thought about a gun safe. Today, those gun cabinets are a relic of a by gone era. Today we live in a "Fort Apache" world, under siege from the bad guys.

My area is becoming worse by the day. Just a couple of weeks ago, 9 cars were broken into in front of the owners' houses in our development which used to be one of the safest developments in the area. When I go to visit my daughter, I take my bolts with me. I figure if these scum bags want to steal my rifles, go ahead. Go luck selling or using them with no bolts. I call my "bolt revenge" or "bolt insurance".

Don't beat yourself up bobcat93. Because some scum bag stole your property you should not condemn yourself. Materials things can be replaced, your health and loves ones can't. While I don't want to lose my firearms, after I lost my beloved wife of 48 years in 2021, I realized that everything else is just stuff. I don't cherish stuff anymore. It's kind of a liberating feeling.

Did the storage unit have insurance? Maybe you can use the loss as a tax write off to minimize the pain. With all that said, I nevertheless feel bad for you. It creates a hollow feeling in oneself when one's property is stolen since most of us spend our hard-earned money to acquire our property.

Have any of y’all ever heard a commercial fire alarm go off in a building. They are SO irritating that you leave. Or put earplugs in.

Home, shop, or storage locker; it would be worth seeking out one of those gawdawful alarms, and do what you need to do to use it for burglar alarm, add relays, timers, switches, contacts, whatever. It goes off, they are likely to haul azz.

Storage locker revenge - true story

I had accepted a promotion out of state and we had about 30 plus days to move. My wife, who is tighter with money than I, saw an advertisement for a 10x25 ish storage locker and the first month was only $1. You could cancel anytime, no exceptions. We rented the largest locker they had and moved all our personal items into the locker for 29 days. On day 30, the moving van showed up at the locker, took away everything. My wife walked into the office and declared she would be moving out of the locker that day. The office lady himmed and hawed a bunch. My wife had a copy of the contract with her and basically said, thanks for locker. We are canceling today per the contract.

Since there was no minimum length of time declared in the contract, we got the use of the locker for a month for $1.
