The Well Dressed Hunter

I WILL be warm and well dressed. A 1/4 minute gun does squat when your teeth are chattering and your hands shaking... 8)

I am impressed with the makers use of natural fibers in concert with synthetics. I just returned this morning from a five mile stroll in a steady rain. I was wearing a 30 year old waxed canvas coat from Scotland and thankful I had bypassed my 2 year old leaky GoreTex wading jacket. Granted the GT jacket is the same cut as the canvas coat but weighs a third of it. I would have gotten soaked in the GT jacket though. I realize that GoreTex when working correctly is great, I have been buying it since it was introduced. It is fragile in comparison to waxed canvas. My guess is this company is on the right track with its approach to design and offer hybrid garments for discriminating hunters.

I respect all of those who, for one reason or another, decide to purchase high end clothing for hunting. That being said, very few of us find ourselves on remote hunts that require us to carry everything we will need for a week in a backpack.

Years ago I purchased a Filson wool coat, hat and matching pants. Rain, snow, sleet, whatever, my outfit might be heavier than some of today's special fabrics but, in terms of keeping me warm and overall durability I'm happy. I can walk through some of the worst briers or thorn patches and it doesn't penetrate.

I have a pair of heavy leather Red Wing boots that are almost 30 years old. Before each season I cover them with grease, put them in the oven on low for an hour and they are good for the season. The only "high tech" items are thinsulate gloves, socks. I still have the old fashion long underwear.

On the coldest or wettest days, I have never had to call it quits because my clothing wasn't sufficient.

If I'm going to spend money for my favorite pastime it will be for another rifle, more brass, the latest optics or, a special hunt somewhere I've never been before. I guess we all have our own priorities.

Filson and Redwing have always been quality made expensive brands, so albeit long ago, you decided to splurge on clothes. It is good to hear that your investment has lasted. Sometimes you do get what you pay for.

I bought my last winter coat a couple years ago, and it was a Filson. The quality is second to none. When I say my last, I mean I will probably never have to buy another one. Its been dragged from Alaska to Montana to Texas and still looks new.

Filson and Redwing now you are talking!!! Although I have Patagonia, Underarmor, etc. all good. Filson dbl cape jacket 100% wool, it's the one to wear
Sub zero and feel warm. wouldn't climb in the bugaboos with it tho. Wore out my Redwings, missed em, lathered snow seal on and tossed in oven at 200 deg.
Melt the SS, not for dinner.
Still going strong, both made in USA. Would have bought Sitka too, except I
Am small and wear small and Sitka offers no small. Sorry Filson is making more in China, no particular xenophobic thoughts, just less good clothing. Filson makes a waxed baseball type hat with wool flaps, it's not clothing, it's equipment.

Filson makes a product , tin cloth chaps, that as far as I know have no direct competition. They are waxed cotton canvas like all of their tin cloth product. I have several thousand miles on horseback chasing bird dogs and wading through briars in a pair that have never failed.

Tin cloth pants, yup, - like my oil finish dbl tin. Must weight 7 lbs. :) nothing else quite like em. Soft armor.

1) good rifle
2) good boots
3) good clothing
4) then get your scope $ with whatever's left,

I tried a set of poly long underwear 18 or so years ago and was amazed at how well it worked. It was pricey but at the end of that winter season I scarfed up 4 more sets and threw the cotton in the rag bin. My problem was after a sweaty hike to a stand location the cotton was worthless - in fact counter productive. Two years ago my sister gave me a pair of Sitka bibs, I put them in the closet till last season and I have to say they are now my favorite pants, bar none!

I had the same issue of longjohns getting wet and being cold while on stand. Now I pack them in my pack then strip down and put them on when I plan on stand hunting, socks too. Polypropylene or wool, cotton is a waste of money for the base layer.
