The Well Dressed Hunter

Lapua40X

California Hunter Education Instructor
I had heard about KUIU clothing for hunters, hikers and other sportsmen but I had only seen a few of the items they offer. I visited their outlet in central California this morning and had a chance to look at and handle virtually everything they make. All I can say is .... wow!!
If you're interested in what I believe is the finest thing available for field activity, whether you use a bow, rifle, pistol, fishing rod or just like to climb tall mountains, allow me to invite you to check this out.

http://shop.kuiu.com/storefront.aspx

I am neither stock holder, employee, owner, associate, nor am I connected in any way with this company. But I sure do love what they make.

Why what? Its the best gear out there. Jason Hariston who owns KUIU is the one who founded Sitka Gear. He sold Sitka to Gore-tex.

Check out the new Super Down. This product is awesome.
Go to KUIU's website and check out their Superdown video vs. standard down.
Pretty impressive.

That does it. I'm going to post the link to Victoria's Secret.
What ever happened to Fredrick's of Hollywood?

Under their search box I asked for Made in USA, it said.

You have searched for made in usa. There are no products or content pages that match your search criteria .

Really nice looking stuff. Made in the USA? I couldn't find country of manufacture on their site.

They are made in Canada, by Canadians. I've never had any ill will toward Canadians.

Vintage pendelton wool........... To be a truly well dressed hunter....... Red neck chick ( pronounced "sheek" ) to those without fashion sophistication

Why is it when somebody posts a nice thing like this he gets his you know what busted.Lets face it almost everything we buy is made in china. We have almost no control as companys are all going there to save money.I dont agree with it but it is the way it is and I try to buy american but in most cases you cant.Try buying disc brake parts for the average car not made in the orient, good luck.I looked and those clothes look really nice by the way.

I have no problem with items made in Canada. Just so happens I am in the market for some backpacking gear, so I appreciate the link. You can buy US/Canadian made backpacking clothing from IBEX as well.

The question was merely where are they made and the answer was the search box said no USA content.
There used to be similar USA products called Thikskin but I haven't seen them around in a while.

I never understood how people can pay $200-$300 for a pair of pants. The hunting industry is such a rip off on just about anything these days.

All this digi camo, scent locker, ultra quiet crap for outrageous prices.... useless. I often don't even wear camo when rifle hunting becaus I have to wear orange anyhow. I do wear camo for archery, but that doesn't have to be waterproof or scent proof because I don't go out in the rain and always play the wind.

If a new hunting clothing company wants to impress and make a name for themselves, show us top quality clothing at a fair price. The woods are not "hollywood", although some people seem to think so...

I agree with your point; at least in part. Stalking requires spending a lot time on my belly in the field. Antelope (pronghorn) for example, are both curious and skittish at the same time and a trophy antelope didn't survive to be a ripe old age by allowing guys with rifles to walk up closer than about 600 - 700 yards. Sometimes even greater distances - and I won't shoot at ranges beyond which I can confidently hit the target. I need something that is tough, comfortable, has zippered bents to allow for air flow, doesn't leak water if I happen to find myself crawling over wet ground and that I can wash. I don't purposely hunt in the rain but rain does happen. I like to hunt in Wyoming where it can be summer on Monday with two feet of snow falling on Tuesday. So my hunting clothing has to be comfortable, water resistant (or better yet, water proof) tear resistant (if you've ever done a belly crawl over a cactus you'll understand that one) and washable. It's not Hollywood, but two weeks of miserable uncomfortable hunting is not something I enjoy.

$75 for a tee shirt is a bit much for me.

But, but, but...it's only $59.99 in the "outlet" section! LOL! Ya, no. I'll stick to my Arctic Shield and old bdu's from various places...and I'll have a lot more money left over for custom rifles, scopes and AMMO!

I don't own any of the Kuiu clothes yet, but I own a bunch of Sitka gear. I am not starting a fight but this clothing isn't designed with you truck warriors in mind. It is designed to keep a mountain hunter dry and relatively comfortable in extreme conditions for extended periods of time. You have to carry your entire wardrobe on you or your pack. There is no choice in the weather you hunt in, nor can you go back to the truck for a change of clothes. Bring your BDU or cotton T-shirts and you will have hypothermia in a couple hours.

Why can't we admire a guy who produces a product that consumers will buy. If the attitude displayed towards high end hunting gear applied to rifles and ammo, we would all be shooting grey box Federal ammo through Remington 742 autoloaders. We also wouldn't have this forum.

Very good point. Kuiu makes some great gear. I have several pieces of clothing that I have bought from them in the outlet section at steep discounts and all have been excellent. Here is a photo from Saturday's match in St. Louis. With temperatures ranging from 35-60 degrees, my Kuiu guide vest over a Sitka Traverse pullover was ideal to stay comfortable. FWIW, the stuff I purchased was a couple of years ago when it was made in Canada. Now I believe most of the stuff is made in Japan.

Bingo! Put your money where it counts :) Although I think the most important part of the hunting equation is your glassing optics ie; binos, spotting scopes. Rather than rifles, ammo, and rifle scopes. If you cant find the critters, the rest of the gear is completely useless ;)

I will admit, however, that I do not skimp on price or quality when it comes to good hunting boots. I can deal with the cheaper clothing of all other sorts. I always buy the Danner Elk Hunters from Cabelas. Finally started on my second pair after 10 years of hard hiking in the rugged high country. They run about $300+shipping, but well worth it. Tried all the $200 or less pairs of boots. They won't last one season where I hunt and my feet are tore all to hell by the end of it. So the extra money for the toughness of my Danner Elk Hunters is worth every penny.

I have tried a lot of the new fancy clothing in the past, and every piece I have is a waste of money when considering how much they cost. The high dollar clothing is nice, but not worth the cost IMO. Only good money I ever spent on clothing was for a pair of Columbia Galatin Ridge berber/wool hunting pants. Paid about $120 and love 'em. I have 2 pair of those pants now. First set lasted me 8 years in the high country and are still very wearable, just that the wool is wearing from picking off damned hitch-hikers so they dont shed moisture as well as they used to. But for a good quality to price ratio wool pant, those are very nice.

I have a pair of the Columbia wool pants as well and they are very warm. I bought them in the bargain cave at Cabelas for $40 and they have lasted at least 4 years so far. I only wear them when I am going to be still hunting because they are heavy and too warm for much movement.

KUIU's claim to fame is lightweight packable clothing that works well when you have to pack everything in on your back. It's not for everyone, but they are leading the way in this style of clothing. Other companies will improve their products because of KUIU.

KUIU gear is expensive, but it is worth it for me. I do a lot of backpack hunting and have a fortune invested in ultra light equipment. When loading up a pack for a 1 to 2 week backpack hunt, there are limits to what you can fit/carry. Weight and quality are crucial. This is what KUIU was made for and where in my experience it has no equal. It is expensive and for most other hunting there are a lot of options that work well and are much less costly.
