I used to live in east NC and dogged deer and shot them with buck shot. Trouble with buck shot is even through your pattern can be made tighter by different chokes, at longer ranges (100ish yards) you loose velocity quickly and they don't penetrate a whole lot. For long range 00 and 000 did best. When the 3 1/2" mags came out they did quite a bit better at longer ranges but man they kill on both ends.

It took me a long time to develop a good 12 ga coyote load.
I was happy for a while... then... the folks in Sacramento decided to double down on their lead ban for hunting and extended that statewide. (Meanwhile, there has been no decline in the blood-lead levels of those condors they used to justify the ban...)
It would be worth the dinner and drinks bill to have this guy give me his ideas on how to start over with no-lead recipes. That, and I’ll bet his hunting stories would be worth it alone.

Have shot a lot of buck shot in 3-gun and European style shotgun matches using Federal Premium with the flitecontrol wad. 2 3/4" 9 pellet 00 buck @ 1325, does a fine job. Have to use a Mod. choke as you will shoot slugs during the same stage as the buck. Typical target is a 9" plate at 50 yd. with a no-shoot right next to it, pellets in the no-shoot cost you points or time. You are basically aiming at the edge of the target farthest away from the no-shoot and will get 4-5 pellets on the plate and none in the no-shoot. Pays to pattern your shotgun with the rounds you use.

Wade's loads are better than Flite control wads....and I have a couple of boxes of flite control wads, 2 3/4" and 3".
