talked my brother into trying THE load alittle slow but shot better than everything else he was trying.I got a new barreled action from Alamo precision rifles about a 3 months ago. I have more 4831 than 4350 so for gigglesnchits I loaded 44.3 and went to the range in lapua srp brass and damn.. guess what .3 no vertical dispersion..
It’s a good load to start with for sure
Well, I too have a 12fv in 6.5cm so I had to try it. I would've believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. Right on the money at 44.3 grains it put 3 in one hole, I didnt wanna push it with 5, lol. Will definitely look into this further since I have quite a bit of H4831sc. We bought 3 of these Savages for around $225 a piece a few years ago, they are a hoot and saves the barrel life on my more expensive toys for plinking steel at 6-700 yards. Thnx for the tip on the load...Well.... it's been over a year now.... anyone else out there using the Carolina Load with any Success?
I'm willing to bet if you played with seating @45gr you'd get 1 hole groups. Push bullet deeper into case in .003 increments it'll roll back in. Praying for no pierced primers. For a new Savage 12 LRP in 6.5 Creedmoor (1:8" twist 26" heavy bbl) w/ Athlon Cronus BTR scope, I'll soon start load development. (Only 36 rounds through the thing, so far. Need a few more range days.)
After measuring the chamber and choosing initial settings, the plan is to use the following:
- Lapua 6.5mm Creedmoor brass, small rifle primer pocket (#4PH6011, same lot#)
- 130gr Hornady ELD-M (#26177, 0.554 BC G1, same lot#) or
- 140gr Hornady ELD-M (#26331, 0.646 BC G1, same lot#)
- Hodgdon H4831SC (couple of jugs, same lot#)
- CCI SR primers
- Depriming with universal decapping die (Redding)
- Resizing with Redding Type-S bushing F/L sizing die (likely 0.290" bushing to start)
- Seating with Redding Competition micrometer seating die
- Concentricity gauge/adjust
- Chronograph at range, to validate velocities (and spread)
Have had the H4831SC powder for awhile, now, long before I saw this discussion thread. Thought the powder characteristics might match well for the mid-weight 65CM bullets. Looks like a good number of people have found an accuracy load with it.
Hopefully a good accuracy combination or two will be found. Don't know the "best" neck tension, powder charge or seating depth yet (of course).
Currently shooting at about 0.75 MOA groups @ 100yds, though I'm 10+ years out of practice with rifles. Still have the trigger pull set to factory pull-weight; need to adjust to ~12-16oz, for starters. Just got the scope zeroed. Almost ready to go.
Praying for no pierced primers.
Large firing pins on small primers are sometimes problematic.
If piercing happens, you will now know why.
I only shoot LRP.
On most of the 36rds shot (factory S&B and Hornady cartridges), the other day, the primer strikes were fairly deep and with sharp relief along the edges of the dimple. Thought it was more aggressive than it needed to be, but every one of them fired well. No pierced primers. Yet.
Thanks for the heads-up. Plenty to focus on. One more thing's no problem.
I bought a lift kit for my savage 12 lrp and installed it myself... works alot betterCheck out Grimstod (Ben Chappell) on here. He does a heck of a job bushing a Savage bolt, and his lift kit is jam up also. Quick turnaround and the price is definitely reasonable.
153.5gr berger 4831sc 43.4 gr 5 shot group pennsylvania load developed by me when berger had no load data and nobody could get it to work my buddies chronograph says 2960 fps but I need to test it myselfYou Guys are probably right... sorry ... My Bad.
I'll go ahead and post it here, and I'm sure that several will then be able to bash me around as if it's nothing special or secret at all... which it probably isn't ... but it was special to be. Sorry for all the trouble... I learned a lesson here. thanks...Dan
The 6.5 CAROLINA LOAD is the load that was given to me from the Guy in Sportsman's Warehouse in Columbia, SC last week. He was just a customer, and I've been trying to find him to thank him, but I've had no success so far.
That Guy told me that he was shooting small primers in Lapua brass, but he didn't say what caliber or primer brand. He was shooting 140 gr bullets (forgot which bullet )for that one hole 3 shot group target that he had in his wallet that he showed me, but he said that he also buys the bulk blems 140 at Midway that still shoot in the 1's and 2's regularly. He said the secret powder was 44.3 grs of H4831SC. I started scratching my head a little bit because of not hearing this used by many in a 6.5 caliber. When I got home I loaded up 3 rounds of each for my Creedmoor... 43.3, 43.7, 44.0, and 44.3 with 140 Hornady SST bullets, Fed 210 primers, seated to 2.800 oval.
The first 3 loads were okay, but when I hit the 44.3, they all touched together like a clover leaf... a small clover leaf. I had 4 rnds of that one and it became a flyer, which was 1/4" to the left of the leaf hole. I thought it was a fluke so I load up some more and they shot the same little hole cluster. I even tried a few more grains of powder and even changed seating depth for testing, but keep coming back to the 44.3 of H4831SC and 2.800. It's not tuned to make a bug hole yet, but it might in the near future... after all... what can I expect from a Cabela's Savage 12 FV 6.5 Creedmoor...LOL.
Now they might even let me be in the Secret Creedmoor Club.
Mind you now... I have NOT tried H4350 yet, but i have been through nearly 2 lbs of R17 and have NOT even come close to consistent groups like this.
Please let me know how The 6.5 Carolina Load works for you.... thanks...Dan
PS... not sure what the speed is yet because my chrony is in the shop... and the speed doesn't matter right now anyways, since I feel like I could shoot flies at 100 yds.
Sorry again for all the trouble. It's hard being me...LOL.
