The rifle you enjoy the most?

I have enjoyed getting back into competitive rifle shooting after several off years and my favorite rifle is my T2K in 6XC. Being a shooter with a few years on me (71) I am enjoying seeing the target with a scope but for my the learning curve is big especially the rapids. I also like my Savage .223 F/TR, having a lot of fun with it to. Last but not least is my Springfield M1A Supermatch that will be willed to my son.

For sheer pleasure to carry, and joy to shoot I take my old 218 Bee. It's a Win mod 43 bolt gun, which is built as light and comfortable as most of the 22 rifles that many of us grew up with.

For off-hand shooting, and stuff like rabbits on the fly, I shoot it better than any rifle I own. The cartridge is mild but deadly, and anything within 200 yards is in great danger. jd
same gun here but in 22 hornet. For a gun 200 ish rangewise, extremely light and loaded cases do not weight much at all.

I have the rifles I want so whatever I'm holding at the time. I will say I didn't care for the HK UMP40. It was hard on the cheek in full auto, the MP5 on the other hand:). I know they're not rifles still I thought I'd mention them.

Here's one of mine that is sometimes my favorite to pack. It's about a hundred years old, and will brain any squirrel within 50 yards. I defy anyone to crack off a few shots with this sweetheart, and not crack a smile. I wouldn't take a thousand bucks for it now, but I'll give it away for free to the right person someday.:)

Good morning,

When you head out to shoot for pleasure/enjoyment what rifle do you grab?
Of this configuration:
1. Bolt rifle
2. Centerfire
I’m planning to build a bolt rifle.
I’m torn between a 223 or a 6br.
Rookie7 you have already decided on a bolt gun and you wonder which caliber.

Consider staging it it to get both.

Start with an accurate off the shelf .223 in either Rem700 or Savage. Both shoot great and are easy to feed. Ammo is affordable for the 223 so you can continue to divert some money to a custom gun project.
Waiting for your custom gun will take time so you continue to shoot the 223 which at some point you can sell if you really can only have one gun.

If you are choosing a 223 bolt gun, one thing to consider is what weight bullet in 223 you want to shoot. My Rem 700 VSSF 223 is 1:10 so I'm limited to 65gr bullets. 55 & 62 grain bullets are super cheap and reasonably accurate. Rifles are available now with faster twist rates which lets you experiment with 69, 75 & 80 possibly heavier grain VLD bullets. For reloading, check out the 223 cartridge guide at the accurateshooter.com main site. Super informative. The cartridge guides are a serious perk with this website. I just upgraded my membership in fact to show support for the work that goes into this site.

Range wise I'm in the same boat as you with local max being 300 yds with possibilities to get to 600.
For longer distance it's drive or fly. Look at it this way, with a shorter range you can save money on optics till you can afford the really nice glass. It still takes practice to work with wind and weather and maintaining good groups.

Good luck with your choice
