The rifle you enjoy the most?

Good morning,

When you head out to shoot for pleasure/enjoyment what rifle do you grab?

Of this configuration:

1. Bolt rifle
2. Centerfire

I know a lot of people enjoy rimfire, but I’m looking at this in terms of centerfire only.

I’m planning to build a bolt rifle.

Family and life come before shooting so I get to compete in PRS events once to twice a year.

99% of my time is spent shooting 300 yds or less for enjoyment.

I’m torn between a 223 or a 6br.

Just bouncing this “want” off of fellow shooters.

If I need to share more info about the build let me know.

I do handload my own.

Thank you

Even though I have and enjoy 223, 223ai, 20-223ai and a 20 Tac, it seems like more and more I take out either the 20SCC (20 VT improved) or the 17 Fire ball.
These rifles are all bolt actions on either Rem or Savage, with the 20 SCC on a Howa sa and the fireball on a savage.

Even though I shoot certain rifles more than others, I enjoy pretty much all my firearms the same. B it military & surplus or custom bolt guns or rimfire or handguns.

My Savage 10FP in 223 with a Shilen Match Select barrel HS Precision stock Leupold MK AR scope.. It is just a hoot to shoot...

edit..

If I were going to build another fun gun it would be a 700 action 223.. Mc Millan stock..

The rifle I grab to shoot for the "fun" of it is a 1874 Pedersoli Sharps. Billy Dixon edition in 45-70. It's just a hoot. My other choice would be a Savage LRPV in 6br because it's just stupid accurate. An afternoon in a prairie dog patch is pretty entertaining.

My "business" rifles are .308's.

Glad to see you have your priorities in order. Family does Trump shooting. It's a great day when you can intertwine the two. Not being a PRS shooter, but given the choices you have stated, I'd go with a 6br every time over a .223. Just my opinion.

7RM Winchester 70-post. It's not as challenging as any of my fast 6mm's or 6.5's to reach out >1000m with, weighs a ton and shoots like a laser beam.

For sheer pleasure to carry, and joy to shoot I take my old 218 Bee. It's a Win mod 43 bolt gun, which is built as light and comfortable as most of the 22 rifles that many of us grew up with.

For off-hand shooting, and stuff like rabbits on the fly, I shoot it better than any rifle I own. The cartridge is mild but deadly, and anything within 200 yards is in great danger. jd

I tend to grab the .223s , I like that my Wife, Son, and myself can shoot them and enjoy ourselves...no recoil to worry about and inexpensive to load for. We do shoot the rimfires at times ,but not half as much as centerfire . I love the reloading aspect of the sport , and it gives me great pleasure to see them look back at me from the bench when testing a new load with a big smile and and a thumbs-up...that's priceless.

I think you are asking which cartridge will please you more....6Br or 223.

Some things in life are ubiquitous...toilet paper, taxes, stupid regulations, worn out head gaskets, broken lawn mowers, plastic water bottles and a 223...

Others are more rare and appreciated....a life-long love of a wonderful wife, children who are respectful, your first muscle car, quiet breezes as the sun goes low over an alfalfa field and a 6BR.

You figure it out from here....

LOL. Snert, I may not be smart enough to figure out your implications!

My fav woods bum rifle is a very old Marlin 336 35 Remington Lever gun. I have 3 decent loads for it. You did say you handload. Mild, Mid. & full power hunting ammo. That old rifle is good for every one in the family to shoot. We use it at the range & informal target shooting at outdoor picnic family events. W/ the lite "mild" loads women & children love that old rifle.
You wanted a bolt gun in 223. I'd Get a light fast CZ 527 with iron sights & the ability to put a scope on it. I'm sure you can make reduced power ammo for that cartridge & every one can enjoy it. That rifle with the set trigger is pretty nifty package & it loks good too. I'm thinking of getting another one. mike in ct

A couple of points to add:

1. I do have a 223 which most would classify as a “walking varmint/predator” rifle. It’s a Winchester Model 70 lightweight with a 22” barrel.

I need to spend more time shooting this rifle. I’ve neglected it over the years and haven’t shot it much.

2. The new rifle will have a 26” MTU or M24 contour. I am anticipating about an 18 lb rifle.

I am only going to place around the 50% mark in a big comp. I don’t have the time or resources to practice and compete enough to be in the top 10 in a sanctioned match.

A one day match is a $300 weekend when you take into account ammo, gas, food, hotel, and the match fee.

I can do that a few times a year, but If I am going to spend that $ on a regular basis it will be on family I.e. camping etc.

So a serious competitor I am not. I enjoy shooting. I have fun at comps. Would I like to win? Sure! But I can’t give what is necessary to be at the top. I’m a recreational shooter and a hunter.

Yeah,easy answer here too....

With a cpl well stocked,wait....make that crammed full, safes worth...

A 2016 stainless SPS R700 sporter in 7-08 shooting 130g cast. Rain or shine, don't matter.

The rifle you're wanting can easily be under 14 lbs with a heavy Palma 26" barrel, a 2 Lb scope and whatever stock. Even with a barrel that's 1" at the muzzle you can easily make it below 15 lbs with bipod attached and all.

I have 18 pound rifles and they're not nice to carry. Also have 14 pound rifles and 12 pound rifles. Those 4 to 6 pounds less make a fair bit of difference when it comes to positional shooting.
One of my 18 pounders is a 300winmag with out a muzzle brake and it's very easy on the shoulder. So a 12 to 14 pound 6br should be plenty heavy to stop almost all the recoil.

Split the difference and go 22br. If your doing the PRS club matches where most shooting is under 600yds I would look at a 22br suited to shoot the 90gr bergers. I have been wanting to put on together for awhile I just cant decide if I want to do the BR or dasher.
