FIRST ghog of the year! 23 feb is my earliest...i'v seen them out for two weeks at 38 degrees. this was a roadside pig that was only a little skiddish. he lived at my buddies farm and we were there to do some target shooting. when i saw him run i drove into the field and parked. he came out to sun himself but was interrupted by a 52 gr cheek going 3600 fps out of my 22 BR. poi was just behind his left shoulder and he just dropped, then the farewell tail salute...8# 7 oz! i can only wonder what he would have weighed at the end of the summer. there were 3 holes other than his, so " i'll be back". i'v noted if one harvest a large ghog, the genetics usually produce others of similar weight in the same location.

Congrats! It'll be a while here in SW Michigan before we see any whistle pigs to shoot at!

the range was very short...i'm sorry but i could not resist. 135 yds( i can hear Nomad47 shaking his head). the 52 cheek was hollowpointed and there was no exit, just a chest full of liquified organs...hydrostatic shock at it's best. don't like shooting the females for the reason mentioned. saw 3 road kills and this represents the males "on the prowl". the ladies are waiting till nature says "NOW"! my latest short range varmint rig will be a 6x45, 13.5 twist, tight chamber kreiger pushing 62-65 gr bullets.

I just lined up a new farm that is 250 acres. The owner says it is rotten with woodchucks. It has not been hunted in over 15 years.

i once would purposedly not "harvest" a ghog until after the pups were out. i also would curtail shooting a really accurate gun...don't want to shoot it out. i recently looked at my birth certificate. right now is certain, tomorrow may not be my pleasure. i plan on shooting a gun on my 100 birthday, but for now, i'm going to enjoy all those primers, bullets, many # of powder and let nature take it's course.

I got one farm last year that has one restriction from the landowner, kill them all! I will hit him early this year! ;D He must look at the damage to his bean fields everyday!
Haven't seen any whistle pigs here in SW Michigan yet but, we still have a decent snow cover along with another "polar vortex" on its way. It won't be long though, I killed my first woodchuck on Easter day last year

Saw a burrow cleaned out of the snow, a dead one on the road and one crawling down an embankment today, 02/27/2014, on the PA Turnpike between Harrisburg and Lancaster exits! Woo Hoo! ;D
