the lead was flying and the pig was dying

FIRST ghog of the year! 23 feb is my earliest...i'v seen them out for two weeks at 38 degrees. this was a roadside pig that was only a little skiddish. he lived at my buddies farm and we were there to do some target shooting. when i saw him run i drove into the field and parked. he came out to sun himself but was interrupted by a 52 gr cheek going 3600 fps out of my 22 BR. poi was just behind his left shoulder and he just dropped, then the farewell tail salute...8# 7 oz! i can only wonder what he would have weighed at the end of the summer. there were 3 holes other than his, so " i'll be back". i'v noted if one harvest a large ghog, the genetics usually produce others of similar weight in the same location.

Congradulations. If it was a female, then you just eliminated multiple targets after the weaning is over.

Still snow here, but saw a wide open recently dug hole....it is time for Grumpus Hogus to visit his girlfriend! Sure sign of spring in several months!

Snert

Snow and heavy ice here near rochester ny and remember not to kill all of them, then there isnt any targets the next year.LOL Snert ,pm me I need to ask you a question.

the range was very short...i'm sorry but i could not resist. 135 yds( i can hear Nomad47 shaking his head). the 52 cheek was hollowpointed and there was no exit, just a chest full of liquified organs...hydrostatic shock at it's best. don't like shooting the females for the reason mentioned. saw 3 road kills and this represents the males "on the prowl". the ladies are waiting till nature says "NOW"! my latest short range varmint rig will be a 6x45, 13.5 twist, tight chamber kreiger pushing 62-65 gr bullets.

Sorry if this offends anyone, :'( But if you don't shoot any until the pups are out, it will make for better hunting for the whole season. Good things come to he who waits. ;D

What he said.

I just lined up a new farm that is 250 acres. The owner says it is rotten with woodchucks. It has not been hunted in over 15 years.

Now, if we could only get some global warming.

i once would purposedly not "harvest" a ghog until after the pups were out. i also would curtail shooting a really accurate gun...don't want to shoot it out. i recently looked at my birth certificate. right now is certain, tomorrow may not be my pleasure. i plan on shooting a gun on my 100 birthday, but for now, i'm going to enjoy all those primers, bullets, many # of powder and let nature take it's course.

Heck I've shot them at execution distances! ;D Finally saw my first for the season along the PA Turnpike this morning, 02/25/14!

I saw a GH road kill near Akron yesterday. It's mating season. I wonder if they hibernate for another month or two after chasing women?

I don't hunt them hard until the pups are out. But if you tell your farmers you won't kill one until pups are out, they might just find someone else to shoot them.
I can't remember last summer for sure, but the summer before my shortest was 12 FEET and the longest was 1062 yards.

I got one farm last year that has one restriction from the landowner, kill them all! I will hit him early this year! ;D He must look at the damage to his bean fields everyday!

Haven't seen any whistle pigs here in SW Michigan yet but, we still have a decent snow cover along with another "polar vortex" on its way. It won't be long though, I killed my first woodchuck on Easter day last year :)!

Saw a burrow cleaned out of the snow, a dead one on the road and one crawling down an embankment today, 02/27/2014, on the PA Turnpike between Harrisburg and Lancaster exits! Woo Hoo! ;D
